I was raised Catholic. The RCC history is a mess wrapped in an enigma. Mary, for instance, was only recognized as "immaculate" in 1854. Reading the bible was forbidden even into the 20th century. And the mass was said in Latin for at least a millenia where no one could understand the rituals...
