Adam looks like this אדם and Edom looks like this אדום both of which mean "red". So then Adam's posterity is seen through Edom...a son of Cain. The difference between the 2 words is the added vav to "Edom." So then Edom is just adding more of the same to Adam. The vav means to add to.
