Here's one example of why Trump is not the greatest president ever, and how he's actually hurting the middle class.

The setup: Trump imposed sweeping "reciprocal" tariffs on nearly every country, using a 1977 emergency-powers law (IEEPA). These were double-digit import taxes applied broadly across the global economy.

The problem: Using an emergency law to levy tariffs was a legal stretch, because the Constitution gives taxation power to Congress, not the president acting alone. He did it anyway.

The ruling: In February 2026, the Supreme Court struck the tariffs down 6-3, holding that the president can't unilaterally set these taxes — that power belongs to Congress. Two of the three justices Trump appointed joined the majority against him.

The money: By the time they were struck down, the government had already collected roughly $133 billion — money importers paid, which showed up as higher prices for consumers at the register.

The refund mess: Courts ruled the companies that paid are entitled to refunds. But the refunds flow to the importing companies — Walmart, Apple, Costco, GM are first in line — not to the consumers who actually absorbed the higher costs. So the public paid the inflated prices, and the corporations get the money back.

So while MAGA thought the tariffs were a win, the middle class effectively paid $133 billion in higher prices — and that money is being refunded to the big corporations MAGA claims to stand against.
