at the moment a hot topic in Christianity is the topic of 'strange fire' which is really dividing Christians in general - for the latest information and update via google see [strange fire conference 2017] - so how about your stance and conclusions - twinc

strangely it sounds as if he does to those who think like him and please do not try and suggest that he does not know the scriptures - twinc
I didn't say "he does not know the scriptures." But rather that it would appear he follows some but does not follow others, taking away from the word of God.

I never liked John MacArthur's teaching, no matter what it was on. His radio program, falsely called 'grace to you' was not grace at all. It was nothing but grace plus works. Plus, in the tenor of MacArthur's voice was always a 'holier than thou' presentation. A condescending tone which I hated. He is a legalist, though he would deny it.

So, I am not surprised that he wants to brand a certain part of Christianity as 'strange fire'. As a legalist he must be the only one that represents the true church. God can't work through others. He must only work through what MacArthur believes.

But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.

I have not done a bunch of research on this guy, but him not following the bible is not a good sign.

I am not sure I follow how you mean "Christianity divided."

Hi Scott,

By what authority do you make this claim?

How do you know he "doesn't agree with the scriptures"?

IHS...Mary
No authority, just the link I posted seemed to indicate that. But mainly that he may not believe in spiritual gifts during these times. How would you describe his doctrine?

It appears I am on the other side of this divide you speak of, twinc. I respect John MacArthur. No, I don't buy into everything he teaches and he can have a condescending tone at times...but he seems honest. I don't agree with Him on the spiritual gifts being not for today.

Concerning the "strange fire" as MacArthur calls it, this too I am familiar with. One of my best friends lives in California and is a member of Bethel; under Bill Johnson and Hedi Baker. I have listened to all their sermons and had exposure to what they call the "fire tunnel" where supposedly the Spirit falls heavy on a person resulting in twitching, excessive laughter, and falling down fits. This is the "strange fire" and if I could warn others...I would tell them to avoid it. This is not the manifestation of the Holy Spirit. I don't know if it is demonic or purely the manifestation of the behavior of flesh that wants to be seen and to experience "strong emotions". Child-like laughter that won't stop and twitching is not the Spirit of God. It is a "strange fire" and not the fire of God. The fire of the Spirit destroys behavior of the flesh and its influences over a person...it does not enhance it. They use Pentecost as an example of drunkenness and that sort of behavior. If that offends, then I am sorry...but that is where I stand. It is not from God

Hi Scott,

Did you base your judgment of MacArthur (that he may not agree with scripture) on a 4 year old article written by Eddie Hyatt, who himself may have some doctrine that does not agree with scripture, or did you actually read/listen to what MacArthur had to say on the subject?

The answer to your question is in post #10.

I am not making a judgment or even venturing a case, only stating some of the information that is out there and contributing to an incomplete presentation of what the dude stands for.

If you are in a position to give an accurate account of what this "strange fire" thing is all about, please do.

Dear sir,

When you said that his doctrine doesn't agree with the scripture.... that is a judgment.

Soooooo ....Did you actually read or listen to what MacArthur had to say on the subject? I don't see an answer to that question ;)

I have made it clear what I believe on the matter and what I think "this strange fire thing is all about".... I refer you to post #10.

I said "sounds like." Where you get "judgement" out of that, I have to attribute to your hostile nature...which is obvious.

As for post #10, it's too brief. That is a comment, not an explanation. Care to elaborate?

Hi,

Judgment defined: an opinion or conclusion

Your statement
was your OPINION and you CONCLUDED that he doesn't agree with scripture.

The point I am trying to make is since you and I don't have the authority to determine who's doctrine agrees with scripture who does have that authority? Not trying to be hostile here...Just trying to see who you think has authority.

If me asking you what authority YOU have to determine if someone else's doctrine agrees with scripture is to difficult of a question to answer then tell me so and we will move on. If you think that simple question is "hostile" then it sounds like you are not prepared to defend your own statements.

I will elaborate after you answer my question of which you dodged again: Did you actually read or listen to what MacArthur had to say on the subject?

IHS...Mary
