Thank you for your response @lforrest , and I totally agree with your 'first sentence', above. But something has always made me curious with the James verse.

JAM 5:20 let him know that he who did turn back a sinner from the straying of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall cover a multitude of sins.

Why do you think it says "a multitude of sins"? Why not, 'the sin' you are helping them with? Or, even more importantly why doesn't it say 'covers ALL your sins'?

That same question now arises with your quote of 1Pet 4:8.
1PE 4:8 Above all hold unfailing your love for one another, since love covers a multitude of sins.

Why "a multitude" and not 'ALL'? Just a question I have asked myself for many years. And pending your response. I'd like to share the 'answer' I believe the "anointing" (1Joh 2:27) revealed to me since this thread started.

I've heard that analogy before, and it comes from an old Cherokee legend, which is not bible.

Not familiar with this "bible compares the soul to a land in which a spring flows." Can you share that reference?

EDIT
P.S. can you explain your username...lforrest? When I first read it, I thought you misspelled 'forest' clfh . Then, looking closer, I thought it stood for 'I for rest'. But when I tried to add a @ to the front of @lforrest....it would not 'tag' your name. Then I figured out that the 'l' in your username wasn't a capital 'i', it was a lower case 'L'. If that truly is the case then what does your username mean?
Why does love cover a multitude of sins? If we look to the parable of the unforgiving servant, we see the opposite. Had that servant forgiven the other servant, it would have been the charitable thing to do and would have been approved of by the king.

So I think love covering a multitude of sins is a more general requirement to receive forgiveness from God who is faithful to forgive all our sins. Love is the basis of the first and second commandments. And these commandments are affirmed by Jesus. And I believe that is what he was warning about in luke 6:46: "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?"

There is a secret place described in the Psalms. It is alluded to in a few places, most prominently when Jesus met the woman at the well. It is like a slice of heaven within our soul. Other biblical references involving streams of water and trees beside the water I believe refer to this place.

You did bring up a good point my friend .
And Why do you call ME LORD and do NOT what i say .
Every word and warning God gave was and is for the good of the one who hears and does .
Now forgiveness is a huge sign also that one truly realizes by grace that
The only goodness in them came from and comes from GOD , His Spirit and it is only
by His grace and mercy given us in Christ we truly are forgiven .
Allow me a word .
God showed me by the scriptures and His Spirit exactly what i was and what i would be without him .
One of the wo rst sinners to walk this earth .
And if GOD due to HIS own mercy and grace can forgive a man like me
of a moutain of sins i did against HIM and humanity
OH how easy it is to forgive one who sins a grain of sand against me .
Love would also co rrect and point one in the right direction and not allow sin , which darn sure includes unbeleif upon them .
The LOVE of GOD would . The love of the wo rld will holler judge not God is love at anyone who tries to correct sin .
I aint no better than any other. BUT I SURE THANK GOD that due to HIM , HIS CHRIST
i am better off and now by THE SPIRIT can do the th ings that do please Him . And believe me when i say
SIN AND UNBELIEF has never and will never be pleasing to GOD . HONORING HIM , THUS HIS SON
is what is pleasing to GOD .

according to the CHRIST of GOD , the SON OF GOD you are correct .
And if the SON said it , IT SURLEY did come of THE FATHER .
Many have and many do lose their soul . for either they heard the gospel and beleived not
or they came to a version of a jesus created by flesh pleasing men
that had they to KEEP their life in this world as it allowed them to remain alive to sin
and clinging to the hopes cares and pleasures in life .
MANY have come to a non crucified jesus . For they are not dead to sins but live very much unto them .
And he who she who lives , is dead while they live in sin .
Many lippers know not the crucified Christ nor the ressurected one . they are not dead to sin
and they have not NEW LIFE but walk as the old man . And dead they are while they do so .
HE who tries to KEEP his life in this world WILL LOSE IT
But he who loses HIS LIFE for my sake WILL FIND IT .

and he who CONTINUES NOT IN ME is cast OUT . a reminder many often try and overlook .
And when men come to remind them , AS EVEN JESUS DID HIS OWN
and as even paul and others did
The response is , HEY GUYS you are not TRUSTING IN JESUS .
BUT WHO is it that trusts not in JESUS . HE SAID IT , thus I beleive IT .
it is they who trust not in HIS words but in another ones words or perhaps acroymns and tulips .
Or perhaps RCC or jw , or mormon or ecumeincal inclusive theologies .
BUT as for THIS wee sheep , I have a motto , IF CHRIST said it , GOD did
and GOD is not a man that he can lie . SO the key is
IF it be written , BELIEVE it and do not twist it to fit what man teaches .

The simple answer to his question is this speaks of THE HOLY GHOST .
Which of course would later be given for at the time JESUS said this HE was not yet crucified and RESSURECTED .
Like a spring of waters springing up into everlasting life .
Let us stay WELL DUG in our bible my friend . For many there be and there be many
who have long been fleecing the churches an dthey sure can appear in wool and as men of righteousness .
Stay dug in the bible , be in prayer .
AND always let us all remember
IF it is written , whether one understands it or not
BELIEVE it and never ever ever twist it to fit what man cliams it to mean .
Understanding cometh in time . but understanding will never come to the twister of the scipture
who simply rather than beleiving what was written they found a way to twist it to fit what they thought was truth .
WE cannot twist truth to learn TRUTH . We beleive and GOD will reveal what it is we DO NEED to kn ow
when we do NEED to know .

Most certainly the Holy Ghost is responsible for life being in the secret place. And the scriptures goes on to affirm the absolute need to be born again of the Spirit. As was written in Romans 8:9.

What is that place without God's Spirit? Let's refer to Jeremiah 2:13
"For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water."

The hour is late and there is much work to do in these last hours my friend .
Double down on the one true and only gospel of Jesus the Christ . We has a harlot doing much damage
in the last days .

And I believe that is what he was warning about in luke 6:46: "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?"
I have a different take on your opinion of that story. That parable started with Peter asking how many times to forgive. Not 7x but 70 X 7 and love is not mentioned at all in that chapter. It is about mercy
MAT 18:33 'Should you not also have had mercy on your fellow slave, in the same way that I had mercy on you?'

IOW we are to always forgive. In the parable, the king forgave the first slave/servant, of his, 10,000 talents and love was never mentioned as a motive, but "compassion/pity" was. That slave has another slave who owed the first slave 100 denari. And the second slave asks for "patience" not love. The first slave did what he did and then the king heard the whole story. And he offered NO LOVE when he threw him in prison because he didn't show "mercy" not love. Then we see the rest of the parable's application for us today.

MAT 18:34 "And his lord, moved with anger, handed him over to the torturers until he should repay all that was owed him.
35 "My heavenly Father will also do the same to you, if each of you does not forgive his brother from your heart."

God has two hands. A Right and left. The loving right hand lifts up and exalts those who do what is right. But the loving and "angry" left hand will turn you and me over to the torturers (SATAN and his kingdom) to torture you until you either repent of your sin, and QUIT doing it, or die on Satan's torture rack, in refusal/rebellion to quit 'the sin' that God's spirit is convicting you of.

Similarly, Satan was simply part of God's loving left hand for corrective judgment of a rebellious Israel in the OT and the rebellious church of the NT. Paul turned men over to Satan for their good. Jesus called Peter Satan to be judged for trying to keep Jesus from stopping the Father's calling, for Jesus to die

JER 25:9 Behold, I will send and take all the families of the north (ISRAEL), saith the LORD, and Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will bring them against this land (ISRAEL),

ISA 45:1 Thus saith the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus,
..who judged covenant breaking Israel.
JER 51:7 Babylon hath been a golden cup in the LORD's hand, ....with king Nebuchadnezzar whom God judged covenant breaking Israel.

As for what the book of James is saying, I believe when we as brethren help to restore another brother or sister, we aren't dealing with all their sins. We are dealing with a besetting sin which the anointed holy spirit within has convicted them that it is time to deal with IT. But a besetting sin which you have committed many, many times...."a multitude of sins". Being dealt with as we "work out your own salvation (of YOUR SOUL) with fear and trembling." Phil 2:12.

Compassion/pity, patience, and mercy do not exist in a vacuum. They are actions driven by love. If the first servant had love for his fellow servant he would have at least been patient to allow the other servant to repay. And it shows he also had contempt towards the king's mercy that was first extended to him. The king is just to punish such hypocrisy.

Just as GOD has his rainbow
the devil has his rainbow .
And just like there is the LOVE OF GOD
the d evil has his own version of what he sells as love and claims is of God .
And how quickly has much of christendom sold out to his harlots love .
Soon Iforrest and i mean quite soon
the ecumeincal phase and its anti christ peace
WILL become the CRUSADES against any and all who did not conform to the inclusive love god
And that IS a fact . But better is it to suffer FOR JESUS and never conform
Than to sell out and even live a king but then FACE THE RIGHTEOUS wrath of GOD and of the LAMB . folks bedda wake the heck up
is all i can say . Now to the trenches my friend the hour is late
and our betrayal does draw nigh .
