I probably shouldn't resurrect this thread, but I did a search today and came across this post.
I'm not affiliated with Newspring and the only connection I have to them is that I went to a church leadership conference on the campus there in Anderson, SC where Perry spoke. I knew I'd heard the name before and now I remember it from this thread. I've listened to the guy's sermons lately and contrary to opinion, he preaches the Word. Any pastor that says get into it (the Bible) is preaching the right thing.
I have come to find much agreement with the entire talk that this was extracted from. See, the lesson of this conference (both the one I attended as well as the one in this video) is that there's not a whole lot of doing in Christianity. The excuses given are "going deep" and the famous line "I'm just not being fed" - amongst others out there. I can personally say that I've been on both sides of the equation, so I am speaking from experience. I've noticed, though, that quite a few times statements like the aforementioned lead to little or no church attendance and oftentimes going deep is reading some Psalms or prophecy and pretending to understand it. The crux of the message is not that we are not to go deep - if you actually listen to the guy beyond some soundbites, you know better - but that most don't put their money where their mouth is. Tithing is a form of this. Jesus talks about money in the New Testament right and left, because it's a powerful indicator of where the heart is set.
If he uses coarse language sometimes to get a point across - well the Bible references whores, bathroom humor, and the Apostle Paul drops a first century rendering of a cuss-word in Philippians 3:8 coincidentally talking about the same religious crap that Perry addresses in his talk.
As for the other comments, just watch some of the testimonials on the website about the journeys that some of the members there have gone through (both with and without Perry) and I'd hardly call those "feel-good." You'll see a man in his 30's dying of cancer to leave behind 3 kids and a wife. His last recorded message was praising God knowing he'd die any day. His wife talks about God getting her through it all after his death. Tell her it's feel-good. In another one, a guy is now best friends with the firefighter that fell asleep and ran head on into his wife's car killing her and their unborn children. You want to talk about God-inspired grace!? Those aren't easy, feel good issues, nobody could have brought that sort of thing together other than God.
