'Which in His times He shall shew,
Who is the blessed and only Potentate,
the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
Who only hath immortality,
dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto;
Whom no man hath seen, nor can see:
to whom be honour and power everlasting.
Amen.'

(1 Timothy 6:15-16)

Hello @marks,

There is only One Who has immortality.

'Verily, verily, I say unto you,
The hour is coming, and now is,
when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God:
and they that hear shall live.
For as the Father hath life in Himself;
so hath He given to the Son to have life in Himself; ... '

brakelite,

I do wish you wouldn't impose on New Covenant Christians the teachings of the OT that applied to the Israelites and other nations.

Obadiah 1:15-16 is addressed to the nation of Edom (v.1), which were a people closely related to the Israelites, being descendants of Esau. Therefore, these 2 verses deal with the punishing of Edom and not of Christians.

We know death will be destroyed eventually because the NT confirms it: 'And the last enemy to be destroyed is death' (1 Cor 15:26 NLT).

As for Nahum 1:9, this deals with Nahum's vision against Ninevah. It has nothing to do with Christians. Please, please do not rip verses out of context and make them mean what you want them to say.

Good to understand that we are now under the New Testament... :)

OzSpen....If I might stick my head into this conversation. OT history re nations and peoples that are in conflict with God and his people are often used as analogous to the larger conflict between Christ and Satan, for example the woman Jezebel representing defiant recalcitrance or Esau (Edom) which was know for human sacrifice as opposed to Jacob. There are many examples like this throughout scripture so it is not out of order or inappropriate to use these to illustrate or highlight truths in any era.

When the people of Edom are addressed in context of Obadiah it is wrong in biblical interpretation to apply to contemporary Christians.

However, as I examined Obadiah 1:15-16 (NIV) again I ind it does have general application: 'The day of the Lord is near for all nations' (v. 15). How near was it when Obadiah was written probably about 586 BC after Babylonian armies destroyed Jerusalem?

"In Him was life" (John 1).
'Jesus said unto her,
"I am the resurrection, and the life:
he that believeth in me,
though he were dead,
yet shall he live:

And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.
Believest thou this?"

(John 11:25-26)

Yes, @farouk,

He is our life (Colossians 3:4). Our life (resurrection life) is
'hid with Christ in God'. When Christ, Who is our life, appears in glory, then we will appear with Him there too.

Praise His Holy Name!

In Christ Jesus

Alive or dead <---- OP

God Creates...
AND
God Makes...

God creates what was NOT, to Exist.
God makes what He creates, TO BE;
Alive or Dead.

LIVING -----------> God
Source of LIFE ---> God

BRIEFLY:

Job 1:

[21] ...the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away;

1 Sam 2
[6] The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up.

Deut 32:
[39]...I kill and I make alive...
.

ALIVE
(Speaking of man, not angels, not animals, not plants)
ANY part of mankind that HAS LIFE IN IT.

BODY....(of man) with it's BLOOD (and flowing), IS a BODY with its LIFE IN IT.

SOUL....(of man) with Gods BREATH in it, IS a SOUL with Gods LIFE IN IT.

SPIRIT...(of man)
1) is in a mans heart.
...is mans natural TRUTH
...is birthed from a mans natural seed.
Or for a converted man;
2) is in a mans NEW heart.
...is Gods TRUTH
...is birthed from Gods Supernatural SEED.

DEAD ~

BODY....without it's BLOOD (flowing), IS a BODY without its LIFE IN IT. It is PHYSICALLY DEAD.

SOUL....without Gods BREATH in it, IS a SOUL without LIFE IN IT. (That currently APPLIES to NO SOULS)

SPIRIT....without Gods TRUTH in it, IS a SPIRIT without LIFE from Gods SEED IN IT. (That currently APPLIES to SOME Spirits of man.)

A BODY, A SOUL, A SPIRIT are all PARTS of a man....that may or may not at any given time HAVE LIFE IN IT....or HAVE LIFE DEPARTED from it.

A BODY, A SOUL, A SPIRIT....MAY have LIFE IN IT......and YET BE "separated" from God.

ANY BODY, SOUL, SPIRIT of a man....
THAT IS "separated" from God.....IS
Accounted.....DEAD TO GOD....whether or not IT IS ALIVE.

ALL BODIES LIFE...(BLOOD)...IS Sentenced TO DIE. God Requires the BLOOD (life) of ALL BODIES.
Many Bodies from the Beginning, HAVE already DIED, Are DYING Daily, and will continue to DIE, Until the Lords WORK is DONE.

ALL SOULS...of men, From the beginning, TO this day, HAVE Gods BREATH in them. They DO NOT Physically DIE.
Many Souls from the Beginning, HAVE already been SEPARATED from God, (accounted DEAD to God) and many will continue to be SEPARATED from God, (and call Dead to God)...and Some Souls are "FOREVER" WITH God (and CALLED Restored, Reconcilled and Saved unto the Lord).

ALL SPIRITS...of men, (which is a mans TRUTH in his heart)...
Some Supernatural SPIRITS of men have been REBORN, with Gods SEED, Gods TRUTH, and SHALL FOREVER Remain WITH God.
ALL SPIRITS of men, (without Gods SEED) SHALL DIE at the TIME of their Body's PHYSICAL DEATH.

At the time of a mans PHYSICAL BODILY DEATH;
BODIES are buried, and Rot.
Saved SOULS, depart the Body and are escorted to Heaven with God, BY Holy Angels.
Born Again SPIRITS (with Gods SEED, depart the Body and are escorted to Heaven with God, By Holy Angels.

Also at the time of a mans PHYSICAL BODILY DEATH
BODIES are buried, (or lay open on the surface of the earth and eaten by birds/animals), and rot.
UN-saved souls depart the Body and are sent to Hell, to experience separation from God and His Wonders and beauty and pleasantries upon the earth. Those souls remain IN Hell WAITING for their DAY of Judgement, still WILL LIFE FROM God, that they can...Hear, speak, taste, touch, see.
(Nothing they hear, speak, taste, touch, see...
IS PLEASING....thus their agony).

SPIRITS of man that were NOT born of Gods SEED....physically DIE with the BODY's physical Death.

ALIVE ~ is Something that has received LIFE from God IN the thing.

DEAD ~ is Something that HAS LIFE from God departed FROM IT.

DEAD ~ is also Something that HAS LIFE from God STILL IN IT....but that the THING with LIFE IN IT....IS SEPARATED FROM GOD and NOT WITH GOD.

Glory to God,
Taken

This, your conclusion to what you wrote previous to it, is flawed on several counts.
First, your assumption that there is life still remaining in a dead entity.
Second, that the life still remains but being separated from the Source of life assumes that life is therefore self-existent...it must in some way sustain its own existence seeing God now has no part to play in its continuance.
Third, if the above be true, then the life the sinner is given, though separated and dead, is immortal...which contradicts the scripture that declares only God has immortality.
And fourth, if such immortality is given as a gift to sinners, as eternal life is given to the redeemed, it seems completely incongruous that sinners receive self sustaining life in order to suffer, while the redeemed remain dependant upon God for life, albeit promised as eternal, through the tree of life.

This, your conclusion to what you wrote previous to it, is flawed on several counts.
First, your assumption that there is life still remaining in a dead entity.

No. I do not base my beliefs on assumptions.

I spoke very specifically...about A MAN...
The Body, Soul, Spirit of A MAN...

Yes, I do believe...
The BODY of a man;
CAN BE Physically ALIVE, or Physicallly DEAD....and DEAD to God, Separated from God...
Because the mans SOUL and SPIRIT are AGAINST God.

You mention the word "ENTITY"....
I was specific...speaking of a mans;
Body, Soul, Spirit.
What specifically are YOU speaking of?

Second, that the life still remains but being separated from the Source of life assumes that life is therefore self-existent...it must in some way sustain its own existence seeing God now has no part to play in its continuance.

That is YOUR ASSUMPTION
I said no such thing.

And Yes, I do believe...
Men are Bodily ALIVE, by the Power God, who IS Life, and Gives Life, and Yet many men, REJECT God, stand AGAINST God, are Separated FROM God.

And Yes, I do believe...
Souls have LIFE FROM God, and continue to have LIFE FROM God, whether IN their LIVING BODY, or departed OUT OF their physically DEAD BODY, whether they are WITH or AGAINST God.
And "IF" such soul is WITH God, it goes to God after it's Bodily physical death.
And "IF" such soul is AGAINST God, it goes to HELL after it's Bodily physical death...and is in TORMENTS and AGONY, being SEPARATED from ALL the pleasentries IT HAD, while IN its LIVING BODY, and ON the Earth's surface.

YOU have to contend, with Scripture that speaks of SOULS being departed out of a physically dead body....and SOULS that return to a physically dead body, BRING the Body back to a LIVING STATE.

YOU have to contend, with Scripture that speaks of SOULS in HELL, In torment, In agony, and WHY....when their BODY is Dead and buried in the ground, in a cave, creamated, rotting, KNOWING NOTHING.

YOU have to contend, with HOW a physically DEAD BODY, that knows nothing, is in Torments.

I do not contend with confusion of those things....Because SCRIPTURE teaches the BODY and SOUL and SPIRIT of a man, are not the SAME THINGS...and EACH of those things of man ARE CORRUPT....and EACH of those things of man....ARE "MADE" reconcilled UNTO God "OF a man" that IS Converted...
"IN" Christ and "FOREVER WITH thee Lord God"...or "SEPARATED" from God.

Third, if the above be true, then the life the sinner is given, though separated and dead, is immortal...which contradicts the scripture that declares only God has immortality.

That then conclusion is YOUR understanding and conclusion....NOT MINE.

Adam was CREATED and MADE in the LIKENESS of God...

When Adams "LIKENESS", BEGAN "distrusting" Gods WORD...and "considered" and "followed" after the Serpents WORD....

Adams "naturally born of the SEED of ADAM, ie Adam's offspring", became IN ADAMS "LIKENESS".

Human men are "NATURALLY BORN after a mans SEED"...and ALL ARE SUBJECT TO...
BODILY DEATH, and SHALL DIE.

ALL SOULS belong "TO GOD". He shall DEPART "HIS BREATH, WHICH IS LIFE"...OUT of SOULS (of men) THAT REJECT HIM......
WHEN God departs HIS LIFE out of SOULS that REJECT HIM....is AFTER they have STOOD BEFORE THE Judged and BEEN Judged.

Do you think Judgement Day has Occured?
Do you think the Judge has Judged ALL Souls.....? I don't.

Do you think souls in hell are in torments, if they have NO LIFE IN THEM?

And fourth, if such immortality is given as a gift to sinners,

Every naturally born person is a SINNER. Because they ALL were born in sin, and Because they ALL have committed sin.

IMMORTALITY is a Gift from God "TO" Forgiven Sinners.
It is a Gift a man who is Converted IS "accounted" and "justified" to Receive....
WHEN his BODY is RISEN UP from where it lay buried and rotting.

as eternal life is given to the redeemed, it seems completely incongruous that sinners receive self sustaining life in order to suffer, while the redeemed remain dependant upon God for life, albeit promised as eternal, through the tree of life.

EVERY man is dependant upon God for LIFE.
God is the Giver of Life and the Taker of Life.
All bodies and souls SHALL be raised UP...
Since ALL bodies and souls SHALL face the Judge and Receive their Judgement.
SOME bodies shall be RAISED in Glory (with eternal Life, immortality, Forever Uncorrupted) and
SOME bodies shall be RAISED in DAMNATION.
Which scripture says, Life from their body and soul SHALL be departed and their body and soul destroyed.

I posed a couple of questions to you, please respond with your reply.

Glory to God,
Taken

Not from that quote. All it says is that the spirit returns to God.

Agreed but you havenot shown that the spirit that returns to God dies.

Both Job and David expressed therebelieve that they would see God after there deaths.

I would argue that Adams body was not created to die, that it was only the fall that started the process of decay of life span and of bodily vigour. If the physical was practicaly eternal the soul/spirit would also be eternal.

The scriptures tell us that the spirit that's in mankind is the same spirit that's in animals. So if you're trying to say that spirit that's in man is a conscious being a intelligent being with emotions etc, I disagree. The animals don't have that kind of spirit.

but let us simply and humbly accept what the Bible says. Nor let us choose just one text or passage, but let us survey the whole scripture record, comparing scripture with scripture, line upon line, here a little there a little, and come then to a conclusion weighing up the evidence.

see this is an old thread. Printed out your OP and underlined several things but will start with only two. If you are still interested in a discussion on the topic, then will maybe bring up the others. Excellent thread title: Alive or dead. Don’t remember if I’ve ever responded to this thread before. This time, never made it past the OP.

11 As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up: 12 So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

Ephesians 5:14-16 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. [15] See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, [16] Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

1 Thessalonians 5:6-8 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. [7] For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. [8] But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

It makes no sense to believe that spirits are in heaven having a mind, a face, fingers and toes, arms and legs, a head to think with, a mouth to praise with, eyes to see with....all these things are still in the grave along with the rest of the body.

1 Corinthians 15:48-49 As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly. [49] And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.

1 Corinthians 12:20-24 But now are they many members, yet but one body. [21] And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. [22] Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary: [23] And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness. [24] For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked:

Again, “makes no sense to believe that spirits are in heaven having a mind, a face, fingers and toes, arms and legs, a head to think with, a mouth to praise with, eyes to see with”
1 Corinthians 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

Romans 15:6 That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

”are in heaven having a mind....to think with, a mouth to praise with, eyes to see with”: 1 Corinthians 2:6-8 Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: [7] But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: [8] Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

Ephesians 5:19 Speaking to yourselves(one to another)in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

There is no evidence in scripture, anywhere, hinting or speaking either implicitly or explicitly, that the spirit that returns to God at death has a life of its own carrying the consciousness or personality of the former man. We must remember that as you also agreed , that God alone is immortal, but that He also is Spirit.

Ahh, the old mortal soul gambit. This is the basis for rejecting Jesus as Christ and God, and choosing rather a mortally created christ and deified man-god of their own.

but let us simply and humbly accept what the Bible says.
The second death is that same death described above...no consiousness...no life....complete oblivion. That death, that oblivion, is the eternal punishment , the eternal death from which there is no resurrection, no hope of the reunion of spirit and body, complete and utter separation from the only source of life, the Living God.

The first rule of rightly dividing the word of truth, is to rightly divide between what is written and what is not.

No Scripture speaks of oblivion, whether in word or in doctrine.

There is no 'non-existence' that can spoken of, when the one true God is anywhere and everywhere at all times, and there is nowhere He is not.

Nor does God the Creator uncreate anything.

And the whole philosophy of mortal souls is simply to do away with a hell of torment for the wicked, and the everlasting torment of the lake of fire for them not written in the Lamb's book of life.

Man is a living soul. We are a combination of two things. Dust, and breath of life...spirit. That combination forms the soul. When we die, Ecclesiastes 12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. And as a result of that separation of dust and breath, body and spirit, the soul ceases to exist.

Sticking to Scripture only didn't hardly get out of the gate.

The truth is first stated, that man is a living soul, but after that, all natural imagination is inserted.

For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.

The soul is spiritual only. It is not created in the flesh, nor can the soul be flesh, because flesh and spirit cannot ever be the same:

That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. And as a result of that separation of dust and breath, body and spirit, the soul ceases to exist.

the breath of life that in conjunction with dust, forms the living soul.

This is the natural theology that gives lip-service to the Spirit of Life as being natural air only, and to a soul as being mortal flesh and blood only.

They teach the spirit and breath of life is the air breathed by the flesh, and the soul is just the mortal breather of the mortal body: nature itself is therefore a soul that breathes the spirit and air of all the earth.

This is a version of pagan spiritism, where the air is spirit itself, so that all creatures on earth breathe the spirit of the world, and so have the same spirit within, along with trees and rivers and grass.

It is of course a lie of the prince and power of the air, that wants all men to remain naturally minded, even if they want to give lip service to the soul of man.

If the soul is flesh and blood only, then all there is in life is flesh and blood only.

God alone is an immortal Spirit.

And so God cannot possibly be a soul, nor dwell as a man on earth.

Neither can His fullness ever dwell in the souls of men and women on earth bodily:

Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

You see, throughout the church age, until just recently, the hope of the Christian was the resurrection.

True. The first resurrection is only of the mortal body changed into immortality.

At present, the wicked go to hell, and the righteous are present with the Lord in heaven.

And also at present, the souls of the righteous are spiritually seated in heavenly places, as well as in their mortal bodies on earth.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.

The hope of eternal life was not in going to heaven at death, but in the reuniting of the decayed body in the grave,

And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

The ones believing Jesus as Christ and God now, are the ones having the eternal life of His Spirit now.

And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

Which the natural mind does not believe, since all they believe in is the natural body.

Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

And this of course still offends the naturally minded, even as it did in Jesus' day, so they ceased walking with Him. Afterall, if the soul is only mortal flesh and blood, then to eat and drink of the blood and flesh of Christ, is cannibalism.

The spiritual mind of Christ knows the blood and flesh of the resurrected Savior, is spiritual food and drink for the soul, and not carnal for the flesh.

Neither is the Spiritual breath for the soul, just the natural air of earth.

It makes no sense to believe that spirits are in heaven having a mind, a face, fingers and toes, arms and legs, a head to think with, a mouth to praise with, eyes to see with....all these things are still in the grave along with the rest of the body.

Bingo. It makes no sense to the natural man, that can only see with physical eyes the limbs of natural bodies, and have no mind of Christ for the spiritual bodies of all souls.

Souls of men are created in the eternal spiritual image of God, not in the mortal natural image of flesh made of dust.

And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held: And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?

And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.

And scripture attests to this very thing. Ecclesiastes 9:5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. 6 Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun......
.....10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.
Kings, prophets, and priests alike testified that in the grave, there is no life, not until the resurrection.

And so, all Scripture speaking of the dead mortal body in the grave, without the spirit nor the soul, is all that matters to the naturalized theologian.

And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Neither the soul nor the spirit is the natural body.

Why must the redeemed seek for immortality or eternal life if it came naturally?

And hear is the confession of natural man: That immortality and eternal life must come naturally to the flesh, if it is given to the soul in Christ Jesus.

(For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us)

That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ is that eternal life and resurrection, which all them that receive and know Him, have fellowship with. even as His very flesh and bones on earth:

For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

The natural minded theologian rejects Jesus Christ as the eternal life and true God, as well as refusing His fellowship of the soul.

Souls of men are created in the eternal spiritual image of God, not in the mortal natural image of flesh made of dust.
Something to consider...Angels have a form and they are spiritual beings. I do believe we will have a form. When the new Heaven and Earth are created and the lion will lay down with the lamb and not be eaten, we will walk upon the new earth with Jesus.
Just makes me believe we will have feet.
Jesus has a body and He taught the disciples another 40 days in His physical resurrected body before He ascended up to Heaven and is dwelling there until His time to return.
Just something to think about.

At this time our soul is a spiritual body without form, waiting for the promise of the redemption and resurrection of the physical body, which will look like the resurrected Christ:

For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection.

And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.

His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.

Feet, breast, head, hairs, mouth, hand, face.

We can safely assume arms and legs.

Maybe ears aren't mentioned, because He wasn't there to listen to John, but to tell him what's what.
