Remember anyone? ( England ) A sixpenny coin was known as a Tanner...a Shilling was known as a Bob . ( to us common people!! :D)

Back in the days of tanners and bobs,
When Mothers had patience and Fathers had jobs.
When football team families wore hand me down shoes,
And T.V gave only two channels to choose.

Back in the days of three penny bits,
when schools employed nurses to search for your nits.
When snowballs were harmless; ice slides were permitted
and all of your jumpers were warm and hand knitted.

Back in the days of hot ginger beers,
when children remained so for more than six years.
When children respected what older folks said,
and pot was a thing you kept under your bed.

Back in the days of Listen with Mother,
when neighbours were friendly and talked to each other.
When cars were so rare you could play in the street.
When Doctors made house calls and Police walked the beat.

Back in the days of Milligan's Goons,
when butter was butter and songs all had tunes.
It was dumplings for dinner and trifle for tea,
and your annual break was a day by the sea.

Back in the days of Dixon's Dock Green,
Crackerjack pens and Lyons ice cream.
When children could freely wear National Health glasses,
and teachers all stood at the FRONT of their classes.

Back in the days of rocking and reeling,
when mobiles were things that you hung from the ceiling. When woodwork and pottery got taught in schools,
and everyone dreamed of a win on the pools.

Back in the days when I was a lad,
I can't help but smile for the fun that I had.
Hopscotch and roller skates; snowballs to lob.
Back in the days of tanners and bobs.
Missing the Hula Hoop, Silly Putty and Pick-up-Sticks. LOL

Elvis for sure. Also Fats Domino...esp Blueberry Hill. ( swoon)
Eddie Cochran, Dwayne Eddie, and for sure Jerry Lee Lewis ...'Great Balls of Fire'.

I only got into Johnny Mathis, Nat King Cole, and Trad Jazz when dating Dave..he was a blues man and Jazz. ( Hated modern jazz and still do)
I've always like Duane Eddie and that twangy guitar.

My Nana's sister was the first in our family with a b and w tv. Saturday night excursion to watch Danny Kaye. During the day we would count the arials on top of the chimneys in the streets to count how many people had TVs. Wasnt many in the late 50s. First movies were cartoons and cowboys and Indians. Grandmother would take me to see Elvis movies. We would walk several miles into town and back with a stop for ice cream.

wow, i did not know that. I bet not with a horse and cart eh? :)
And a jug to pour the milk into ( before they went to bottles) Do you still get glass bottles?

Our teacher warmed the milk bottles on the radiator , because of ice chips in them...I HATED warm milk and still 'do!!!! lol

I was born in a country village but don't remember milk being sold in jugs. I hated school milk so my mum arranged for me to take mine home and made rice puddings etc with it. I never could drink milk until we got a fridge and I like it now.

The sale of televisions rocketed in the UK just prior to the Coronation in 1953 but we still didn't get one so I had to listen to it on the radio while my sister was invited to her friend's house to watch on their TV.

I am a bit younger, but remember many of those things. We had three channels to choose from, I was a teenager when we got BBC2 - and colour TV, but I remember black and white.
Muffin the mule, no I was a ' watch with mother ' child
I use to hate Saturday afternoons, had to watch ' wrestling ' ( all staged ) and the football results coming through on the TV ticker tape machine !
Mind you as a treat mum would buy winkles that we would have in vinegar and a lovely special cream cake. Sunday was always bath night.

There were the three channels for years, BBC1, BBC2 and ITV. That was it.

So you didn't like the wrestling programmes?

I liked the wrestling and used to watch it with my dad. But that was real.

Wrestling is kind of cheerful to watch.

Back in those days it would always be men wrestling with men; still is, mainly.

Now there's also women's wrestling (but I wouldn't be comfortable with men and women wrestling with each other).

Women's football is ok but I wouldn't want to watch two women wrestling.

Oh I'm not saying ppl should go for it; but it's out there.

But it used to be always men who did it; and a lot of ppl found wrestling cheerful to watch.
There used to be some real characters back in the day.
