Matthew 25:5, the Bible states clearly that all 10 women became drowsy and fell asleep, there is a very common misconception about this specific part of the story, many people who read this parable believe that the foolish virgins were condemned and punished simply because they fell asleep, they assume the moral of the story is that believers must never close their eyes, never rest and never experience spiritual fatigue, but this is an incorrect reading of the text. The Bible clearly states that the wise virgins also fell asleep, both the wise and the foolish grew tried, both groups surrendered to sleep as the night dragged on.

The foolish virgins did not fail, because they fell asleep, they failed, because they assumed they always had plenty of time, their fatal mistake was not closing their eyes at midnight, their fatal mistake happened hours earlier in the daylight, when they looked at their empty flasks and decided it did not matter. The foolish virgins failed, because they neglected to gather extra oil before the delay ever happened, true spiritual preparation happens in the quiet, secret places long before the midnight cry is ever heard. The wise virgins could sleep peacefully, because their preparation was already complete, their flasks were full and their inward reality was secure, when you possess genuine spiritual life, the natural weariness of living in a broken world will not destroy your standing with God.

Matthew 25:6-7, the sin is not growing tired, the sin is being completely empty when the final hour strikes, the silence of the long delay is suddenly shattered, at midnight, a loud cry announced that the bridegroom was arriving. This midnight cry represents the sudden, unexpected and shocking return of Jesus Christ, the hour of midnight symbolizes a time when people are least prepared, when the world is dark and when ordinary life has completely paused. The shout rings out in darkness and the time for waiting is instantly over, all 10 women awake immediately, they grab their wooden torches and begin to trim them, adjusting the rags and attempting to bring the fire back to life.

For the wise virgins, this is a moment of joy, they open their flasks, pour the fresh oil over the cloth and their torches blaze into the night, ready to honor the arriving groom. But for the foolish virgins, this is a moment of absolute panic, the few drops of oil that were originally on their torches have completely burned away during the long wait, the wood is dry and the cloth is charred. When the groom finally arrives, your outward religion will quickly burn out if you have no inner oil to sustain it, the crisis of the midnight hour does not create spiritual readiness, it only reveals what is already there.
