Matthew 25:8-9, the foolish women realize too late that their preparation was entirely superficial, the grand event they have been waiting for is finally happening and they have absolutely nothing to offer, they are standing in the dark watching their tiny insufficient flames smolder and die. In their state of sheer panic, the foolish virgins turn to the wise virgins and make a desperate request, they ask the wise to share their oil, wanting a portion of what the women possess to save them from the cultural shame of the dark torches. The wise virgins refuse, telling the foolish women no, because there would not be enough oil for everyone.

Many think the wise virgins were acting out of cruelty, pride or selfishness, you are taught to share and the refusal to share seems unloving, but you must view this through the lens of the historical and cultural background. The primary duty of the bridesmaids was to provide light for the bridegroom’s procession, if the wise virgins divided their oil, there would not be enough fuel to sustain any of the torches for the duration of the journey, all 10 torches would burn out halfway to the house. The entire procession would be plunged into darkness, the celebration would be ruined and the bridegroom would be deeply dishonored, the wise virgins were not being selfish, they were being entirely faithful to their fundamental duty.

Beyond the historical context, the refusal of the wise virgins reveals a devastating spiritual truth, it shows you that spiritual readiness and genuine faith cannot be transferred from one person to another. You cannot borrow someone else’s relationship with God, when your own faith runs dry. You cannot rely on the faith of your parents to save you. You cannot rely on the fervent prayers of your grandmother, the theological knowledge of your pastor or the general goodness of your friends. You cannot survive the judgment of God, simply by standing close to people who genuinely love him.

The foolish virgins thought they could ride on the coattails of the wise, assuming proximity to the oil was the same thing as possessing the oil, when the midnight cry sound, every single human being will stand before God based entirely on their own inward condition. You cannot borrow a history of faithful obedience, a lifetime of secret prayer or a heart that has been transformed by grace, spiritual readiness is strictly non-transferable. Because they cannot borrow the oil, the foolish virgins are forced to leave, the wise tell them to go to the merchants and buy oil for themselves.
