Blaspheming the Holy Spirit:

Mark 3:28-30
28 "Assuredly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they may utter;

29 but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation" —

30 because they said, "He has an unclean spirit."
NKJV

According to the scripture above, those that say a person has an unclean spirit when that person has the indwelling of the Holy Spirit they are blaspheming the Holy Spirit.

It is written; “What God has called clean let no man call unclean”

Hmmm....I do not think that you can blaspheme the Holy Spirit out of ignorance but you'd have to have knowledge that the Holy Spirit is functioning in a person to blaspheme him in this way....otherwise there is gonna be a whole lot of believers and non-believers out there destined for hell because of their lack of knowledge in any given situation...

Shalom!

I believe blaspheming the Holy Spirit is refusing to be justified and sanctified. Refusing to be redeemed. This is one of the reasons I cannot reject the doctrine of Hell.

The Holy Spirit is the one who convicts a person and leads them to God. The Bible tells us that no man would chose of his own accord to seek and follow God, it is only through the work of the Spirit that we come to truly know our desperate need for Jesus. I believe that the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is a life times worth of stubborn rejection of what the Spirit is saying. They refuse to acknowledge Him or His work. They have heard the good news, they have heard the whisperings of conscience within that is the Spirit talking, but they sneer and walk away. This is the unforgivable sin, a complete and total hardening of their hearts and minds against Jesus.

Also, there is the well used saying..."If a Christian is worried they have blasphemed against the Spirit, then they haven't!"

the "He" referred to in verse 30 isn't any Christian; it is Jesus.

John 14:6 KJVR

(6) Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Rejecting Jesus makes one "subject to eternal condemnation"; true?

GLY!!!

Were the Pharrisees doing it out of ignorance?

I think I will accept the reason given in the scriptures; "because they said, "He has an unclean spirit" and let it go at that.

What most are failing to see is that blaspheming the Holy Spirit can not be forgiven, not in this world or the world to come, so say the scriptures.

Those that refuse the Holy Spirit can, at a later date before they die, accept Him. So I don't think that is the same thing Jesus was saying about blaspheming the Holy Spirit.

The Pharisees were saying Jesus was casting out devils by Beelzebub when in actuality it was by the Holy Ghost. Which we should be careful in what we judge as if the individual we are judging is Spirit filled we are not making fun of the individual but the Holy Spirit.

Blasphemy is a transliteration of a Greek word meaning literally "to speak harm." In the biblical context, blasphemy is an attitude of disrespect that finds expression in an act directed against the character of God.

The New Testament broadens the concept of blasphemy to include actions against Christ and the church as the body of Christ. Jesus was regarded by the Jewish leaders as a blasphemer Himself (Mark 2:7). When tried by the Sanhedrin, Jesus not only claimed messianic dignity, but further claimed the supreme exalted status (Luke 22:69). Such a claim, according to the Sanhedrin, fit the charge of blasphemy and, therefore, deserved death (Matt. 26:65; Mark 14:64). However, according to the New Testament perspective, the real blasphemers were those who denied the messianic claims of Jesus and rejected His unity with the Father (Mark 15:29; Luke 22:65; 23:39).

The unity of Christ and the church is recognized in the fact that persecutions against Christians are labeled as blasphemous acts (1 Tim. 1:13; 1 Pet. 4:4; Rev. 2:9). It is also important that Christians avoid conduct that might give an occasion for blasphemy, especially in the area of attitude and speech (Eph. 4:31; Col. 3:8; 1 Tim. 6:4; Titus 3:2).

The sin of blasphemy is a sin that can be forgiven. However, there is a sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit that cannot be forgiven (Matt. 12:32; Mark 3:29; Luke 12:10). This is a state of hardness in which one consciously and willfully resists God's saving power and grace. It is a desperate condition that is beyond the situation of forgiveness because one is not able to recognize and repent of sin. Thus one wanting to repent of blasphemy against the Spirit cannot have committed the sin.

Hope that helps from my computer bible study program

i should have been more precise by saying "...permanently rejecting..."; this was my intent

my point was that, in my understanding, the scripture you referenced does not clearly justify the belief that 'saying that any person has an unclean spirit when that person has the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is blaspheming the Holy Spirit' - if this was true, i believe it would have been clear in the scriptures; but more importantly, Jesus is unique in that He was fully God and fully man - such an accusation against Jesus is an accusation against God.

no one can see another person's heart, therefore no one can be certain that another person has the Holy Spirit within. The Pharisees were still alive; still able to repent at the time Jesus said this - i don't see that this was a judgement on them by Jesus; this was Jesus affirming that He and the Holy Spirit are one with God.

but the scripture confirm themselves ('in the mouth of two or three witnesses let everything be established' - do you have a second witness to confirm this?

GLY!!!

You would have to be present with Jesus , attributing his powers to an impure spirit , to be guilty of blasphemy.

With that in mind , read Mark 3 again and it will be clear that is what what Jesus meant.

Thanks.

I'm glad someone here pointed that out, otherwise some here might think Richard was equating himself as our Lord Jesus Christ!

Way to go veteran!

So if I say I am indwelled with the Holy Spirit I am making myself God. Okay, what spirit indwells you???

Do you believe that the Holy Spirit indwells a born again child of God?

If you say that the Holy Spirit does and it is said that the child of God has a Devil and is teaching the Devil’s doctrine aren’t you doing exactly what the Pharisees were doing?

I am a child of God and you continue to pour out your venom on me and everything I write and IMHO people that do that should ask God’s forgiveness.

I don't mind a good discussion about what I write but when those that reply are vindictive and want to assassinate my character I think they go to far.

If a person is truly trying to follow Christ, his concern should be more about grieving the Holy Spirit instead of blaspheming Him.

IMHO I don't believe a child of God can blaspheme the Holy Spirit because the Holy Spirit lives within them.

But those without will do it in the name of religion just like the Pharisees did to Jesus and the religious Jews did to Stephen.

I would tend to agree with you about a Christian blaspheming the Holy Spirit.
If you are truly seeking God, you are seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
That is why I think - for Christians - the grieving of the Holy Spirit is a bigger concern. Ephesians 4 warns about it.

He is extremely sensitive and what we put before our eyes or listen to will greatly impact Him.
Even the things we think or the words that come out of our mouth have an impact on Him.

In this age the only sins that grieves the Holy Spirit in this age are the sins of those that will not place ALL their belief, faith, trust, confidence and hope in the work of Jesus on the cross, the sheding of His blood pays for all the sins of men in the world. But it only applies if you have belief, faith, trust, confidence and hope in God's promise that it does. If you don't then it doesn't. I will not go back under laws that sinful flesh cannot keep. I will no longer allow myself to feel condemned by my sinful flesh.

By the way, why is everyone seemingly SEEKING? I am no longer seeking. I have found a precious stone worth more than anything in this world and that stone is Jesus Christ.

It's obvious Richard has no way out of the false ideas he's come here preaching.

He has not just been preaching ideas of faith on Christ, and Christ's saving grace, but a lie that no matter what one does after they've believed on Jesus Christ, that they can never... lose their Salvation.

Not only that, he has been preaching there is no longer ANY need for a Christian to repent to Christ for ANY future sins we may commit, even denying The Lord's Prayer that our Lord Jesus gave us to pray, which has repentance of sins in it!

And also add to that the false doctrine that TWO separate Gospels exist, one for Gentiles and another one for Israel.

Nor is he just arguing 'grace' vs. 'works', but he's been presenting the lie that works in Christ Jesus mean nothing.

About the ONLY thing He's been preaching that agrees with God's Word is that Christ's Salvation is by Faith, and not by works. As a minimum, all Christians should believe that.

But those other things he's been preaching, those are doctrines of devils. And having those kind of un-Biblical doctrines from men are not a sign of listening to The Holy spirit, nor having The Holy Spirit indwelling.

Nor will he change, because that would require repentance, something he doesn't even believe exists for us Christians!!!

Just to set the record straight of who is actually guilty of blaspheming, here's what Richard Burger said to me on Jul 10, 2011 in his 'Building a strawman..." post...

But you don't seem to understand that that the program for Isreal (The earthly kingdom with law) and this program of grace (without law) is of God's making and you can't change it because you are not God. You can only be saved by the program that God says is in effect. In this age it is God's grace, not the law of Moses.
