Buddha is a curious teaching here in the USA and the way it was explained here was that Buddha the monk retreated and meditated for a very long time during a time his village was being overtaken and turmoil by a war.
At some long time he saw a great serpent and gave him a message of peace, he shared it with the village, and was written in history. Eventually leading to Buddhists.
An interesting note is the study of animals from the garden of Eden. Adam was given to name every thing there. From creeping, crawling to cattle, birds maybe fish and even other types.
Some martial arts and combat involves offense and defense abilities of those creatures. Made into adaptions humans might use they can be effective defensive or offensive maneuvers and actions.
Take for example the raccoon. When bothered by humans it can look at them and if approached too close, or bothered too long...
can slowly descend from a tree,
turn towards the annoyance and then slowly approach.
As if it is annoyed that it has to deal with a "threat"
The mystery is what happens when humans do not slowly or at effective speed back away.
That would be a wild raccoon. And most likely a physical attack would happen from the raccoon. At which point the sudden burst attack of the raccoon is probably not predictable. And the human might not be at a safe distance.
Raccoons are relatively in the small but ferocious family of predators like the badger and wolverine. The latter being more dangerous.
Like the Raccoon,
A serpent can slowly slither, the mouse might notice or not notice the calm and peaceful approaching serpent. Or might not perceive the serpent as a threat. Then when in striking distance, the sudden strike happens. Then the serpent might back away some distance, if venomous might wait for the venomto act. Or it might coil around the mouse to capture the mouse.
The mystery of "peace" in the message to Buddha is yet an unwritten message, of peace and also combat.
Other animals might seem peaceful enough to approach or when they are approaching. If it is a normal peaceful or not wild creature they can be viewed. If a dangerous type creature then the standard defense is maintaining an effective distance. Defense devices are also recommended like pepper spray and/or other devices.
Effective distance is one method for safely avoiding an assault or attack.
Humans have of course learned those methods.
A lesson to be worked on might be the standard tree climbing sloth. Cute perhaps, quite slow. And often covered in green or yellow moss or fungie. Perhaps algae from the hugging of trees while traversing their branches to reach the leaves they consume.
