When I was in the school cadets, the ration packs we were given had small tins of butter and when we wanted a light we would put a small hole in the tin and place the tin in the fire with the holed side facing up. When the tin got hot and butter escaped as a vapour and caught alight, it provided a bright while light to seen by.
If the tin was put into the fire without the hole, it would explode from the pressure in the tin and the butter vapour released would burn very rapidly with a loud bang. This was a dangerous practice as the tin would be launched out of the fire with a lot of force propelling it away from the fire.

I have purchased cases of that Red feather canned butter and when I was spending a pretty penny on doing so I reconsidered and started canning my own butter. Its so easy to do.
