2 Corinthians 13:5, healthy examination walks the narrow road between promise believed, presence discerned, path confirmed, consider how those three hold together and consider what life looks like when that presence is real. When the New Testament wants to show whether living faith is present, it does not point to one dramatic moment, it points to a direction you can see in ordinary days. 1 John 2:3, John says, knowing him is shown in keeping his commandments, 1 John 3:14, passing from death to life is shown in loving the brothers, 1 John 4:7-8, loving as God loves flows from knowing God who is love. Three threads appear again and again, believing in Christ, obeying Christ, loving as Christ loves, not as three separate achievements, as one living movement toward him.

Consider a compass rather than a report card, a report card demands straight marks in every subject with no failure allowed, a compass shows where the needle points even when the traveler stumbles on the path. One asks, are you perfect, the other asks, when you wander, where do you return, notice how works fit in that picture. Ephesians 2:10, believers are created in Christ for good works prepared beforehand, fruit does not become root, the apple does not make the tree alive, the living tree grows apples, that distinction protects both sides. Against presumption, it says a claimed faith with no movement toward obedience and love should be questioned. Against despair, it says, an imperfect faith that still clings and confesses and obeys imperfectly and loves increasingly is not disqualified by being unfinished.

There is also an inner side and without it the picture stays cold, Romans 8:16, two voices in agreement, not the human spirit shouting alone to convince itself, not an emotional surge mistaken for proof, the Spirit of God bearing witness alongside the renewed human spirit. How do you tell that witness from mere mood? Look at what it produces, Romans 8:14-17, those led by the Spirit are children who cry out in intimate trust, endure suffering with hope and inherit with Christ. True witness humbles, draws to the word, moves toward holiness, softens toward people and persists through trial, Romans 8:1, no condemnation, not delayed condemnation, not partial condemnation, none for those in him. Examination never overturns that ground, it checks whether you are standing on it. a church testing the wrong person, a promise that allows knowing, false tests that cannot give rest, a true question centered on a person, a direction confirmed by believing and obeying and loving, an inner witness alongside an outer life.

False Alternative. Report cards certainly allow failure. There is no freedom unless there is the freedom to fail.

This post seems indicative of the American culture strongly uncomfortable with any kind of judgment. And the reason for this is a gigantic EGO, pained at introspection lacking the humility necessary to address areas of deficiency.

In the auto industry, there is the idea of a BALANCED SCORE CARD. A management axiom is that you can’t manage something you don’t measure. Besides where you are headed, what other areas in life do you value?
  1. Health?
  2. Wealth?
  3. Relationships?
In the twilight of my life, I’ve thought about the people that have come and gone in my life. There for a season but gone for a reason. It takes commitment to maintain deep, meaningful relationships. A married couple can’t be spending all their free time with one side of the family to be fair. Here is where score cards come in handy.

A symbol can be loud and empty at the same time, agape is what turns volume into music. So, the crisis in Corinth asks the first question of the fruit of Spirit, what happens when gifted people are not loving people? Paul’s answer is brutal and merciful at the same time, they become noise.

1 Peter 2:10, the radical change that occurs when you come to Christ, you were once a outsider, estranged from God and his promises, but through Christ, you have been brought near, adopted into his family and made part of his eternal plan. Having established Christ as the cornerstone of your faith and your identity as his chosen people. Suffering, it’s not just any suffering Peter speaks of, but suffering for doing good, bearing hardship because of your faith and integrity. Suffering is an inevitable part of life, yet Peter reframes it as something far more significant than pain or injustice, the unfairness of suffering to it’s potential as a testimony of faith and an opportunity to glorify God.

I like the compass idea, mostly because the report card version messed with me for years. I'd lie awake after every bad day wondering if I'd failed some test. Wrangler has a point that failure is real, but to me the question is where you turn when you stumble, and that's what 1 John 1:9 gets at: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to purify us from all unrighteousness." For anyone stuck in that loop, this page on doubt helped me: Bible Verses for Doubt, When Faith Feels Distant

1 Peter 3:14, what a radical idea, to see suffering as a blessing, yet this is precisely the perspective Peter urges you to adopt, standing firm in your convictions, knowing it might cost you your reputation, your relationships or even your life. That’s the reality Peter’s audience faced, many of them were scattered across hostile regions, enduring persecution simply for bearing the name of Christ. Yet, Peter doesn’t tell them to retaliate or despair, instead he says, do not fear their threats, do not be frightened. How is it possible not to fear in the face of such adversity, Peter’s answer lies in where you place your trust.

Wrangler has a point that failure is real

That’s a subset of my point, which is to hold yourself accountable. You want to go true North?
  1. How many steps in the right direction have you taken today? This week? This month? This year?
  2. Have you encountered unexpected challenges in following the compass reading of your choice? What have you done to resolve these challenges?
  3. What are you going to do to make more progress heading true North today? This week? This month? This year?
When I first started dating again after my divorce, I encountered women who said they valued education. None were prepared for the follow up question; what have you done in the last 2 decades to advance your education? Nothing. Impressive. Who are they lying to? Primarily themselves.

What separates man from all other life is we make tools. A compass and a BALANCED SCORECARD are 2 tools and they both have their place. I also strongly recommend using the Daily Prioritized Task List, which is an invaluable tool that ties your deeply held values to planning out your day.

Many days I find I only did a few of many tasks. This tool gives me the satisfaction of knowing that at least I worked on what was most important to me. A score card is the end of an evaluation period. The Daily Prioritized Task List is the beginning of each day where we can rejoice and bring glory to God. Don’t tell yourself you are headed true North in theory. Progress in actual practice.

1 Peter 3:15, to refer Christ as Lord, is to elevate him above all else, above your fears, above your circumstances and even above the pain you endure. It’s a call to anchor yourself in his sovereignty and trust that he is working all things for his glory and your ultimate good. Peter doesn’t stop at trust, he points to the power of your testimony, he encourages believers to be ready to give an answer for the hope that they have, but to do so with gentleness and respect. Romans 12:9-10, living as a living sacrifice also means embodying God’s love in your relationships, this love isn’t just about kind words or gestures, it’s about genuine sacrificial love that seeks the best for others, that honors them even when it’s inconvenient, a love that’s patient, forgiving and willing to put others first, a love that mirrors Christ’s love for you.
