1 John 4:1-8 teaches that true knowledge of God is inseparable from love, and discerning false teachers requires testing their spirit against the truth of Christ and the evidence of love.

Context of 1 John 4:1-8

The Apostle John warns believers to "believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God" because many false prophets have entered the world (1 John 4:1 KJV) King James Bible Online King James Bible Online. A key test of authenticity is whether a teacher confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh; denial of this truth indicates the spirit of antichrist (1 John 4:3 KJV) King James Bible Online King James Bible Online. John emphasizes that believers are of God and have overcome false teachings because "greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world" (1 John 4:4 KJV) King James Bible Online King James Bible Online.

Love as the Mark of Knowing God

John then shifts to the central principle: love is the defining evidence of knowing God. He writes, "He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love" (1 John 4:8 KJV) BibleGateway.com BibleGateway.com+1. This means that genuine knowledge of God is not merely intellectual or doctrinal but is demonstrated through active love toward others. Every person who truly knows God will naturally express love, because love originates from God and reflects His character (1 John 4:7 KJV) King James Bible Online King James Bible Online.

Practical Application for Discerning False Teachers

  1. Test their confession of Christ: True teachers acknowledge Jesus Christ as fully human and fully divine (1 John 4:2-3 KJV) King James Bible Online King James Bible Online.
  2. Observe their love: A lack of love toward others indicates a lack of true knowledge of God (1 John 4:7-8 KJV) King James Bible Online King James Bible Online+1.
  3. Compare their message to Scripture: Those who are "of the world" speak worldly messages, while those who know God align with the Spirit of truth (1 John 4:5-6 KJV) King James Bible Online King James Bible Online.

Summary

1 John 4:1-8 teaches that discernment involves both doctrinal truth and the evidence of love. False teachers can be identified by their denial of Christ and absence of love, while true believers demonstrate God’s love in action. Love is not optional; it is the proof of God dwelling within a person, and it serves as the ultimate test of spiritual authenticity (1 John 4:12 KJV) BibleGateway.com BibleGateway.com.
By applying these principles, believers can discern false teachings and cultivate a life that reflects the love of God, fulfilling the command to love one another as evidence of knowing Him (1 John 4:11 KJV) King James Bible Online King James Bible Online.

Because of "false teachers" (2 Peter 2:1) spreading "destructive doctrines" among the Church, the greater meaning of 1 John 4:3 has been almost completely obscured.

A test of this...is easy, ask yourself:
  • Has Jesus come in your own flesh?
  • And if He has, did it occur after He first went to the Father?
If your answer is Yes--consider what that actually means--do the math. What then is your testimony, your witness--that He has gone and since then come again into you--or not?

Hello Brother Scott, how are you all? We are well. Interesting question: how we are what we are learning now.
