Odd statement to make.

This is true. The Scripture does not say that we should ask for forgiveness. It tells us to confess, repent and forsake sin, Then, according to 1 John 1:9, "If we confess our sin, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sin and cleanse us from all unrighteousness". Merely asking forgiveness without repentance and forsaking of sin means nothing and has no moral value to God.
