...following a Jewish carpenter...
This question strikes me as being a bit silly.
Of course, if somehow, every Bible on the face of the earth were destroyed, God could communicate directly with His creation.
In fact, I think we've all heard of conversions that have happened in recent times, without any Bible. I was particularly struck by the story of a young Chinese mother who was out cutting grass...she gathered it and dried it to sell...and she had her little baby with her. They were attacked by a hungry animal. The woman had met a missionary, but all she understood was "Jesus saves." So, she cried out for this Jesus to save her...and the hungry critter was distracted by an injured critter who became his lunch. He left the mother and baby alone. I read that story in a book entitled "Jesus Freaks" by D.C. Talk that tells all sorts of stories like this.

But these things are the exception, rather than the rule.

The Bible is God's chosen method for communicating with His people today.
The men who wrote it were inspired by God. Now, if God thought it was important enough to inspire these men to write, and the writers took the time to do the work...the least we can do is read the thing.
Most of us would never have heard of the God of the Bible...without the Bible.

Is the Bible necessary for salvation? I can't say that it definitely is, in every case.
But, in the majority of cases, it is definitely instrumental...

One may not need the physical Bible to be saved but One needs the Word of the LORD!
In the Old Testament men lived by the Word of the Prophet, Theophanic Appearances, The Law of Moses. (Each though was communicated by God through the Spirit of God to man)
In the New Testament men lived by the Written Word of the Law and the oral Word of God through the elders, scribes, priests and rabbis and Jesus the Living Word (those who accepted Him) And in these instances The Lord communicated by His Spirit to man).
Today we still must depend and lean and live on the Word of God and to us we receive it through the Holy Writ (Bible) and through The Spirit speaking to us directly and through other men!

Thus, whether its written or not the Word of the Lord is critical to a healthy spiritual life and to salvation! Yet God communicates through His Spirit! Seek the Spirit of the Lord and He will write the Word on your heart and lead you into all Truth! Spirit is not going to lead against the Word for He breathed it! And the Word is not going to lead you against the Spirit for that's where its origins are!

"Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart." (2 Corinthians 3:3)
