To understand the "poor" in the United States you need to understand the notion of "relative deprivation". Look it up.
An article came out today saying that suicide has surpassed auto accidents in U.S. deaths. They cite the depressed economic situation as the cause. Now, think about that. People living in third world countries who don't get enough to eat or have clean water to drink find meaningful lives while those who get plenty to eat and have water to flush their toilets kill themselves because of economic reasons. We have created these expectations largely through what the government guarantees to "the poor".
