Some basic claifications
In relation to Hell, torture is not the same thing as torment.
1) Torture versus torment:
Torture is The sadistic infliction of pain for mere enjoyment or sport.
Torment is the result of choice(s) made whereby the outcome becomes torment to the individual.
Now, let's cover some reasons for the reasons for an everlasting Hell.
2) The duration of any sin is not a factor, and is therefore insignificant when asking why Hell is everlasting for finite sins.
Example: If I embezzle $1 each day from the cash register of my employers store, I end up with about $365 at the end of the year I stole. That is only a misdemeanor in most states. If I murder someone, which can take a second or two, I can be sent to prison for life or placed on death row for execution.
3) The magnitude of the authority is a tremendous factor in the level of punishment one receives.
If I fenagle last year's tax return by a couple thousand dollars to my favor and my son sees it, he will have less respect for me. If the IRS notices the error, they will fine me and charge penalties if they don't decide to make an example out of me for the act with prison time.
4) The depths of the sins we commit determine the level of punishment received.
If I slug my neighbor for calling me names, that's assault and likely will result in our never being able to become friends.
Were I to have rejected believing in the death, burial and resurrection of Christ on the third day and then I die in my sins, all without having done any harm to my neighbor or anyone else, I would end up in Hell.
This shows to us the error in understanding sin in relation to God, His level of authority and the level of offense sin is to a perfect and holy God. Experiences in this world and looking upon sin as having anything to do with proportionality between sins against each other and against God, that viewpoint is simply wrong.
