Thank you for the post.
So, if they have helicopters than can pick up water from any reservoir, why not the ocean?
Oh (the standard response goes), the salt would ruin xxx and yyy.
(So, burned to the ground is preferable?)

The "Super Scoopers" can and do pick up ocean water. But other aircraft cannot because of corrosion. And some other aircraft carry only fire retardant.
The strong winds are why the fires spread out of control. We haven't had winds like that since 2011. Embers blew for miles. Aircraft to fight the fires could not fly.
Stronger winds coming back tonight. Also, we rarely get rain except for El Nino years.
