David took five stones because he was over prepared. He didn't know that all the philistines would flee when Goliath fell, he might have needed to take out a few more, at least his armour bearer.My favorite part of the story is that David did not stand and wait for Goliath.So confident was he in God's deliverance that he ran to meet Goliath.1 Samuel 17: 48And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came, and drew nigh to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.
