People think of the kingdom of God as a place, there is God’s space, where God is king, there’s a reality in which God reigns and where everything that is done, is God’s will. The story of the Bible as it goes on, the earth has become a place where God’s will is not done, because we assert our will over it and God has allowed us to do that. Jesus is announcing the arrival of God’s reign, (the Kingdom of God) to take back his world from us. So, God makes a really good world, it’s exploding with potential in life. So God creates humans out of dirt (divine breath,) humans are earthlings and God grants humans to rule, it’s depicting humans as having some royal sacred task, and that connects back to the image of God, humans are a mix of heaven and earth.
God is the creator king, he speaks and things happen, he makes a people who are going to live under his reign. God makes these people in a certain way and gives them a unique role, they are the image of God, the humans are the way that God reigns the world. God’s plan was to share his world with humans and to have his reign and his rule and his will be brought about in the world through image-bearing human beings. So God makes a image of God’s own self, in humans, and God reigns the world through humans. The Bible begins with God sharing his rule and asking humans to embody that rule and reign over creation, humans managing and ruling the world on God’s behalf.
What went wrong with the Kingdom of God, somehow the image-bearing human beings of God became distorted or ruined, as a result, the reign of God has not been fully here? So Jesus starts announcing the Kingdom of God has arrived, repent and believe the good news, because the Kingdom of God is here in a new way, that forces you to repent! Now, you have to take stock, you need to respond in some way, because this is world-altering news. You can’t be neutral to Jesus’ announcement, because the whole world is being affected by the arrival of the Kingdom of God. Paul develops Jesus as the new type of Adam, and the people connected to him are the new humans, but it took a new human, God binding himself in humanity to be the image God on our behalf.
There was a breakdown in the relationship, there was a distrust and humans embrace a narrative that says, God’s holding out on us, that he doesn’t have our best in mind, it would be better for us if we define good and evil for ourselves. So that breakdown in the relationship creates this rift between God and the bearers of God’s image. So, God so closely binds himself to humans in the incarnation of Jesus, that he becomes the human that we are made to be and then through Jesus, we become the humans that we are made to be. But humans, like middle managers who want too much power, they want to define the values and vision and direction of the company for themselves, so they set up an alternate kingdom, we will build a city with a tower that reaches up to the gods, which is this huge #### ### to God. So, the story of the Bible becomes a story of the clash of the kingdoms.
