Colossians 2
New Living Translation

2 I want you to know how much I have agonized for you and for the church at Laodicea, and for many other believers who have never met me personally.

2 I want them to be encouraged and knit together by strong ties of love. I want them to have complete confidence that they understand God’s mysterious plan, which is Christ himself.

3 In him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

4 I am telling you this so no one will deceive you with well-crafted arguments.

5 For though I am far away from you, my heart is with you. And I rejoice that you are living as you should and that your faith in Christ is strong.

Freedom from Rules and New Life in Christ
6 And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him.

7 Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.

8 Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.

9 For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body.

10 So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.

11 When you came to Christ, you were “circumcised,” but not by a physical procedure. Christ performed a spiritual circumcision—the cutting away of your sinful nature.

12 For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.

13 You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins.

14 He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross.

15 In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.

16 So don’t let anyone condemn you for what you eat or drink, or for not celebrating certain holy days or new moon ceremonies or Sabbaths.

17 For these rules are only shadows of the reality yet to come. And Christ himself is that reality.

18 Don’t let anyone condemn you by insisting on pious self-denial or the worship of angels, saying they have had visions about these things. Their sinful minds have made them proud,

19 and they are not connected to Christ, the head of the body. For he holds the whole body together with its joints and ligaments, and it grows as God nourishes it.

20 You have died with Christ, and he has set you free from the spiritual powers of this world. So why do you keep on following the rules of the world, such as,

21 “Don’t handle! Don’t taste! Don’t touch!”?

22 Such rules are mere human teachings about things that deteriorate as we use them.

23 These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, pious self-denial, and severe bodily discipline. But they provide no help in conquering a person’s evil desires.

I would encourage you to read Colossians 2 again in the King James Bible.

Colossians 2:14 says that Christ nailed those ordinances that were against us.

What ordinances?

Colossians 2:16 tells us these ordinances. They are Sabbath days, holy days, dietary laws. We are not to let other people judge us on whether we keep the sabbath days or holy days, etcetera.

So this would be the ceremonial laws in the Old Covenant. In other words, you don’t have to keep the Saturday Sabbath, circumcision, animal sacrifices, etcetera. But this does not free you from any rule keeping of any kind, though. That would be a great error on your part if that is what you are saying.

Paul says this:

“To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.” (1 Corinthians 9:21).

So Paul says he is not without the law to God but he is under the law(s) of Christ.

Galatians 6:2
“Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.”

In Romans 8:2, keeping the “Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus” (A New Covenant Law) makes us free from the Law of Sin and Death (the Old Law). This New Covenant Law is defined for us in Romans 8:1. See the full version of Romans 8:1 in the King James Bible (Which is neutered in Modern Bibles). So you have to walk after the Spirit and not after the flesh (sin) so as not to be under the Condemnation. For we are told to walk after the Spirit and you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh (sin) (See: Galatians 5:16).

So I would say… there are still rules under the New Covenant.
There are a small list of commands that are even called a command in the New Testament.

Amen Jesus commands for us to obey all His rules that should govern our lives and the same with the Apostle’s teachings on obedience . Jesus and the Apostle’s said on several occasions if you love Jesus you will obey Him, His rules , laws , commands etc

Depends what is meant by rules. Jesus said, ' If You Love Me, keep my commandments.'

What where his commandments, but to Love God and to Love others.

Galatians 5

After we are truly saved by God’s grace, we walk in the Spirit.

Walking in the Spirit leads a person to fulfilling the righteousness (or righteous aspect or part) of the law.

Romans 8:4
“That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

Galatians 5:16
This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”

I believe we as Christians cannot justify sin or think we can abide in sin and be saved.

Believers need to confess their sins to Jesus, and forsake them (Proverbs 28:13) (1 John 1:9) (1 John 2:1) (1 John 1:7).
Believers need to accept the gospel message in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4.
A person has to be broken with a godly sorrow over their sin.
Much prayer and seeking a deeper relationship and walk with God will help.
Jeremiah 29:13 says: “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”

God's answer:

Colossians 3:14-15 KJV
14) And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
15) And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

Much love!

Matthew,

Being "free from rules" and the consequences that that brings is known as Anarchy.

However the "Spiritual Freedom" we gain from being in a righteous relationship with Christ is a very different thing. A Spiritual Freedom in Christ still has boundary conditions, i.e. "rules/laws", that has to be complied with to for us to "keep" the Spiritual Freedom we gain from being in a righteous relationship with Christ.

When we pass through the boundary conditions of our Spiritual Freedom in Christ, we can detect this transition because we move into the areas where sins will prevail in our lives.

The restoration of our Spiritual Freedom in Christ is so simple to do but all we ever deal with are the manifesting sins that occur when we pass through the boundary conditions that separate us from God without accepting that the transition through the boundary conditions is because we have turned away from God. It is this sin that we need to deal with, first and accept that the manifested sins that we commit have consequences that will trouble us unless we deal with them in an appropriate manner.

Shalom

You make some valid point @Jay Ross

Learning the Gospel and understanding, that we ourselves are naturally sinful.

I remember Jesus saying it is from the heart, where evil thoughts form upon realizing these truths from Jesus we can understand we are by natural sinful, which he had paid for by the shedding is blood on the cross.

We adhere to abiding in Christ and allowing his life to be introduced in our lives through it by faith, and allowing God to renew our mind and hearts.

Even in the aspect of Paul he said that we are to obey the governing authorities, and also Paul wrote to Timothy we should pray for all people, even our leaders that may rule over the nation.
