My pastor inisted to my boyfriend that long - or even longish - hair was inappropriate for men. David listened and, eventually, agreed to an uncompromisingly short haircut.I admire his dedication, but was he right to obey the pastor in this?
Jules C, The Bible does say that we should be obedient and submissive to the ones taking the lead over us, Heb 13:17. Of course this is only if they are folling Bible principles. To a Christian it is what the Bible says that makes all the difference, and thed Bible usually has good advise on just about everything we are likely to run into. Under the Mosaic Law Covenant all males were required to let their hair grow long, Lev 19:27. Under the Christian dispensation, ot vulgar era, there was a different set of laws. Consider what is said in the 11th chapter of 1Corinthians, 1Cor 11:14-16. The Romans kept their hair short, so it was probably in relation to them that Christians were to keep their hair short.

What false version are you reading from? Lev 19:27 does not require long hair. It says, "Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard." God wanted square corners, not round corners. This has nothing to do with the length of the hair. And, if it were a command to have long hair, then God has pretty well damned the priests: "They must not shave their heads or let their hair grow long, but they are to keep the hair of their heads trimmed." Here's the simple English version for you "They must not let their hair grow long." Note, this was God's instruction to a people of a culture God designed. God had the Hebrews commit genocide to protect that culture.
Consider what is said in the 11th chapter of 1Corinthians, 1Cor 11:14-16. The Romans kept their hair short, so it was probably in relation to them that Christians were to keep their hair short.
There's two stupid things about that line of reason. 1) You are giving a reason for Paul's instruction that is not the reason Paul gave. 2) Today, it is culturally preferable for men to have short hair, probably no less so today than then, so if Paul's reason is cultural, that reason still applies today. Not only is it a shame for man to have long hair. It's a shame for a man to defend another man's long hair.

The poll is already closed for some reason but here's my two cents. I've known some good men with really long hair and some downright jerks who had butch haircuts. In the long run, our salvation won't be based on the length of our hair. However, I do believe that Christian men should be well groomed. I have a couple of friends who belong to a huge, mainstream church (Calvary Chapel) who don't seem to give two hoots about their appearance. One of them has two stud earrings in his hear and both have scraggly facial hair. Don't get me wrong...there's nothing wrong with a well groomed beard but neither of these dudes have well groomed beards. Bottom line, their overall appearance is "street bummish." I believe that if you have the means, you should either grow a full beard and keep it groomed or shave it off altogether. Same with the hair. Keep it washed, combed and well groomed. Here's what the Bible has to say on the issue: 1 Cor 11:14-15, "Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering."

Jules C, You are only to obey anyone if what they say is from Holy Scripture. In this case the pastor was right. Consider 1Cor 11:14-16, where this subject was spoken about. It is a dishonor for men to have long hair. Notice verse 16, where we are told this is the rule for all Christians.:amen:

I don't think the length of one's hair is important in and of itself. If he cut it as a part of a larger personal transformation, if it had a deeper significance for him- then that makes it something meaningful.

It's interesting that historically, compared with the hair length of 17th century men who were Cavaliers or Puritans, my wife's hair, for example, would be regarded as short. But then compared with men's military standards of today (or even with women from some parts of Africa, especially East Africa) my wife's hair would be regarded as quite long, I think.
