Today is Valentine's Day! Isn't it named after a saint? I am not sure about the legend attached to it. I think St. Valentine performed illegal marriages between Roman soldiers and the women they loved. In pagan Roman empire soldiers were not allowed to get married, because then they would become softened family men instead of tough hardened soldiers with a girl in every port. They visited brothels, raped local women, had plenty of lovers, but they were not allowed to settle down and marry just one woman. When some Roman soldiers became Christians, they wanted to stay faithful to the woman they truly loved, and St. Valentine perform the marriage ceremony. I am not exactly sure if this is what happened, correct me if I am wrong. But I think St. Valentine was put to death, martyred, for performed these marriage ceremonies of soldiers. I also know that according to some pagan customs, birds chose their mates on February fourteenth. There are a lot of folklore traditions associated with Valentine's Day.
