Just trying out my new Knoppix Operating System. In other words, I am connected to the Internet and composing this message using this operating system. Knoppix is Linux and works "live" off of CD, although you can configure it with an external memory device (e.g. a stick). Once I get use to this OS, I will permanently install it on the hard drive along side my windows XP. Eventually I will do away with the Windows OS altogether (probably a few years yet when XP is no longer supported I will not buy a newer version Microsoft OS).Knoppix is a free open source operating system loaded with modules (aka drivers) for hardware, lots of applications, including a "planetarium" program, multimedia programs, two web browsers and Thunderbird email client and for you with web sites an FTP program. In addition, it has "office" programs like Microsoft Office. And this just touches the tip of the iceburg, but I know this thing is loaded with WAY more than Microsoft XP Operating System. However, my weakness yet is trying to remember how Linux organizes its directories. Some things I have to relearn. For example, in Linux there is no C: drive or floppy A: drive or CD ROM D: drive. Linux "mounts" these things and treats them as folders like in Windows sub directories. Consequently, when I went to use my FTP, I was a little lost in how it displayed folders. But like anything, it takes time to learn, or I should say in this case relearn it since I had Linux in class several years ago. Have to brush up!
