1 Corinthians 2:2 (NASB20)
For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.

‘Him crucified’

This Paul puts forth as his most valued possession, the knowledge of Christ and Him crucified…

But why so..?

For Paul knew that in Christ being crucified were all his problems brought to an end… Though the problems themselves might not vanish, they would no longer be his problems, but Christ’s…. For Paul knowing and believing and holding true to the truth that when Christ died he died, therefore was his life now Christ’s…. This is the faith Paul had, this faith that brought all things of Paul’s life to an end, now his life became Christ’s that Christ might do with it as He wished… For the immediate Divine inspiration of Christ living His life in and through him, all started with Christ being crucified and him being joined with Christ in His death…. For nothing else mattered in all of creation but this truth; ‘Him crucified’…. For in these words is all of Heaven made available to the one that would hold to these words…. For the why of Him being crucified causes these words and the knowledge of Him to be the most valuable thing in all of creation…. For when it is seen that Him being crucified was not for a debt owned God, but for the fulfillment of the law of God, the heart runs to the cross to be joined with it… For in this cross the glory of glories is revealed, the all of everything is given to the believing soul… God Himself becomes that one’s portion, and that one becomes God’s portion…

I once heard an evangelist preach on this verse. He said that before Paul made his first visit to Corinth he stopped in Athens on the way. Here is where the Scripture records Paul's famous sermon on Mars Hill. Then he proceeded to Corinth.

The evangelist said that Paul preached the resurrection but not Christ crucified on Mars Hill. He didn't have the converts he had hoped for. He thinks somewhere between Athens and Corinth the Holy Spirit spoke to Paul, "preach the Cross."

When Paul wrote his first letter to the Corinthians, he was reflecting back to that visit telling the Corinthians,

1 Cor. 2:1-2

"And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.

For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified."
