As a "repenting" believer in Christ, I am often driven to significant anger at what I see happening in our country and around the world. I've always been a student of history and a rabid follower of current events, which is simply history in the making. I used to discuss such topics on political message boards, but my anger got the better of me and I proceeded to behave in an unchristian manner. I've been reminded that I'm not a follower of Christ, or at least not a faithful follower of Christ, if I don't learn to control my big mouth. And as I recall Jesus's words about a dog returning to its vomit, I decided that my days of discussing politics and current events online with strangers are OVER. As Jesus said, if something is causing you to sin, remove it - and that's what I'm doing.

So how do YOU control your own anger?

My anger is controlled by remembering that I too, was part of this corrupt world before Christ gave me a citizenship in Heaven instead.

Thank you for your post. Venting one’s anger uncontrollably is indeed a manifestation of our fallen nature.

Becoming angry at injustices is part of being a good Christian, but we need to let animosity go as quickly as possible. It helps to remember that God is in always charge everywhere, and He will set things right in His own time.

As far as avoiding the reflexive uncalled-for rejoinder, it can take time and practice to interact only with Christian love. Perhaps part of a daily prayer could be to ask God to remind you to pause when provoked, consider what a loving response should be, and then proceed.

If you are aware of a public role model in this regard, perhaps study that person’s careful words and manner, and learn there from.

— Praying for your certain success now that you recognize the issue.

I recognize that God is still in control and I turn the news off mostly. Sometimes I think politics can be a huge distraction from what we can be doing to improve our own lives, families, and communities. The news is meant to makes us sad and angry so I stopped watching it. I focus on how I can be a good Christian, wife, mother, and homemaker and live out the calling on my life from God. In other words, it's the things within my control that matter the most, not some national issue or corruption I have zero power to change.

There is nothing wrong with anger at injustice, cruelty etc around the world. Its what you do next that matters.

Often there is nothing physical that we can do, but we can pray. We can seek out those Christian organisations that are trying to help and we can use them to better inform us about those situations so we can pray intelligently for those in need. We can also send cash so physical help can be given.
James 2: 14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

18 But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.”

Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. 19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.

Anger, like love, hate, joy, sorrow, mad…etc. are simply emotions… God has and man has.

Disagreeing, being able to articulate why, and trusting your disagreeing and why is according to The Lord Gods Doctrine, is suitable, and favorable to God.

Perhaps “in Check”… you mean:
To act, beyond ones Authority… to Judge and Carry out Revenge…which is Authority Alone held by God.

No doubt I am angry, mad, sickened and disgusted by the behaviors of people In my view…country. And am quite sure God being All Knowing, has a greater degree of Waxing Hotter and Hotter anger and disgust regarding the Whole World… and His Vengeance will be Just and Horrific.

Glory to God,
Taken

I meant to be able to continue to walk in the Spirit and not become so enraged that I begin to hate evil doers.

I have no issue with “hate”.
I presume, most people understand “hate” to mean the Opposite of “love”, I disagree with that perspective.

I believe God IS “without Beginning”…
God IS Love, and has no counter part.

I believe the “act” of Love, “IS” Doing that which IS “Right”, regardless of the consequence.

I believe the “feeling” of Love, “IS” is that fluttery, gushy, “feeling” that may make a persons temp rise, heart race, palms sweat, to be in the presence of another they love.

I believe “IN” Love, “IS” the utter enjoyment to be in an exclusive faithful committed relationship,
Both Glorifying to God, a giver, taker, helper, privately intimate, in hard and easy times.

I believe “hate” “IS” a strong Dislike….
Be it, a behavior, a person, horrid smells, cheating, lying, thievery, corruption or the instigators thereof.

Glory to God,
Taken

proverbs 6
These six things the Lord hates,
Yes, seven are an abomination to [a]Him:
17 A[b] proud look,
A lying tongue,
Hands that shed innocent blood,
18 A heart that devises wicked plans,
Feet that are swift in running to evil,
19 A false witness who speaks lies,
And one who sows discord among brethren.

I am angry too, but what I learned to do was distinguish between anger and "micro-aggression". Micro-aggression is like an anger, but it is not "righteous" (as anger can be), its more like Tourette's (at least if you are undiscerning) - it builds up slowly and then leads to an outburst. My mistake in the past has been trying to "control" the outburst, by becoming more and more sensitive to the micro-aggression - learning to tell how built up it was. It's been that way from my youth - I distinctly remember my Dad saying "you need to control that anger": the fact that it starts out as tiny ('micro') aggression is no excuse!

So the end result was, I would not "get angry" with people, but behind their back I would play the part of the Devil ("this person's a loser", "don't they understand sin!?") and my micro-aggression would take over - I would be hard to discipline, prone to argument, etc. I think in reality God taught me this way, because He wanted me to become skillful in words and if He told me how to feel about what I was saying or what was being said to me, I would not be analytical enough to discern the argument from the truth.

The problem for me was, the only way I could figure out how to control the micro-aggression on my own, was to allow myself to become delusional - let me explain: if my thinking became delusional, I could wipe the tablet of my mind clean, not worrying about what micro-aggression I lost because it being "delusional" made it 'invalid'. It was a temporary measure, I am sure there is a better way in the Holy Spirit - I will have to consign my thinking to Him to learn the better!

Thanks for speaking up; I think basically a lot of the Church is angry at the world - He that has the Law and doesn't preach it, surely provokes himself to wrath!

Keeping self righteousness ie, the judgement of others in check, is critical.

Hello RepentingChristian, even though we, who are in Christ, have been given a new nature with new desires by God .. e.g. Ezekiel 36:26-27; John 3:3; Ephesians 2:1-3, 4-5, 10; 2 Corinthians 5:17, our old nature, though subdued and pushed into the background now, continues to rear its ugly head whenever we allow it to (whenever we fail to walk in/by the power of the Holy Spirit, who indwells us).

This can certainly result in sinful behavior on our part (like the signifigant outbursts of anger that you mentioned .. see Galatians 5:19-23, sins that a true follower of Christ then, chooses to confess and repent of! So, since you've both recongnized the problem and continue to make the choice to be penitent, I believe that it is incorrect for someone to say that "you are not a follower of Christ" or even that you are "not a faithful follower of Christ", because your choosing to be penitent is one of the telltale signs that you really are a true believer (see the Pink quote at the bottom of this post), unlike the unsaved, whose lives are continually characterized by sin and impenitence instead (just like ours used to be before we became Christians).

I decided that my days of discussing politics and current events online with strangers are OVER. As Jesus said, if something is causing you to sin, remove it - and that's what I'm doing.
Good :Hnds

I turned away from the national news stations (for the most part) and started watching my local news stations instead, because I found that my local stations reported on the national news that I needed to hear, but they do so (typically) without all of the unnecessary sensationalism that the 24/7 news stations always seem to add to it (plus, you never have to listen to the same story over and over again).

You also get your local news when you watch your local news stations (obviously) and, quite frankly, lighter/friendlier news too, which makes the local news broadcasts an overall better experience, at least it has been for me.

So how do YOU control your own anger?
First and foremost, by knowing/understanding what God commands, specifically, and then by choosing to walk in obedience to His commands with the help/guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Here is some of what the Bible tells us to do (see the passage below), and it helps us know how to do so, too

Psalm 119
9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Thy word.
11 Thy word I have treasured/hidden in my heart, that I may not sin against Thee.

The thing about memorizing verses and passages from the Bible is that they not only end up being the ones that are nearest and dearest to your heart, they will also give the Holy Spirit a VERY signifigant tool to use in guiding you in your daily walk with/before Him (which certainly includes His help with NOT sinning, because whenever you are tempted to do so the HS will bring several of your perfectly memorized verses to the forefront of your mind to remind you why you shouldn't) :gd

There are some other thoughts and/or practical methods that the Bible mentions (as things to remember or do when we face daily temptations), and here are some of them in no particular order: 2 Corinthians 10:5; James 4:7; Also: 1 Corinthians 10:13; Ephesians 4:26-27, Ephesians 4:29, 1 Thess 5:17; James 1:19-20.

God bless you!!
