Earrings of gold signify a wise reprover upon an obedient ear here

Prov 25:12 As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold,
so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.

All the people broke these off as is signified here

Exd 32:3 And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears,
and brought them unto Aaron.

Then Aaron made a golden calf. The picture could just be a figure of turning away from what they were commanded and just being stiffnecked andd having uncircumcised ears

Acts 7:51 Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears

Exodus 32:6 is touched upon in 1 Cr 10:7

1 Cr 10:7 Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

In the literal sense of things its not encouraged

1 Peter 3:3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel
