I think your president greatly underestimated the resilience and intransigence of Iran. At the moment it's Iran who has the upper hand successfully playing the Hormuz Strait ace card, while Trump has no cards. Or it must be (knowing he can't stand to lose) he will try to conquer the heavily guarded island of Kharg. Expecting American soldiers to win, Iranian missiles and drones will rain from the sky and they will not spare the oil, following and old saying, if we can't have it, you can't have it, the nature of war.
