Jonah 1:

17 And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
The Hebrew "three days and three nights" does not mean 3 24-hour days. It was a figure of speech.

Gill:

and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights: that is, one whole natural day, consisting of twenty four hours, and part of two others.
Similarly, Pulpit:

Three days and three nights; i.e., according to Hebrew usage, parts of the days and nights; i.e. one whole day, and parts of the day before and after this.
Keil and Delitzsch:

The three days and three nights are not to be regarded as fully three times twenty hours, but are to be interpreted according to Hebrew usage, as signifying that Jonah was vomited up again on the third day after he had been swallowed
Benson:

“The Hebrew language,” says Lowth, “has no one word to express what we call a natural day; so that what the Greeks express by Νυχθημερον, they denote by a day and a night. Therefore the space of time consisting of one whole revolution of twenty-four hours, and a part of two others, is fitly expressed in that language by three days and three nights. Such a space of time our Lord lay in the grave;” (that is, one whole νυχθημερον, or natural day, and part of two others;) “and we may from thence conclude that Jonah, who was an eminent figure of him in this particular, was no longer in the fish’s belly.”
Jesus cited Jonah in Matthew 12:

40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
That was the only place in the NT where Jesus mentioned three days and three nights and it was in connection with Jonah.

Elsewhere in Mark, Jesus talked about "after three days", Mark 8:

31 And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again.
Mark 9:

31 For he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, after three days he will rise.”
Mark 10:

34 And they will mock him and spit on him, and flog him and kill him. And after three days he will rise.
Other listeners understood that as "in three days", Mark 14:

58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.’”
More precisely, Jesus frequently talked about "on the third day", Luke 9:

22 Saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.”
Luke 24:

7 That the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” 46 And said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and *on the third day rise from the dead,
Matthew 16:

21 From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.
Matthew 17:

23 And they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day.” And they were greatly distressed.
Matthew 20:

19 And deliver him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day.”
That's what the Jews understood, Matthew 27:

63 And said, “Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise.’ 64 Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.”
In fact, on the day of resurrection, Jesus met two disciples on the road to Emmaus, Luke 24:

21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.
That confirmed that Jesus rose on the 3rd day. There are other confirmations,
Acts 10:

40 But God raised him on the third day and made him to appear,
1 Corinthians 15:

4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
"3 days and 3 nights" was a figure of speech; in fact and precision, Jesus rose on the 3rd day after only 2 nights.

FAQ: The sign of Jonah (Matt 12:40) speaks of three days and three nights.
Doesn't that indicate Jesus should not have been seen alive until the fourth day?

REPLY: There is a preponderance of evidence testifying that Christ's crucified
dead body was restored to life during the third day rather than later after
the whole day was over and done with.

Matt 17:22-23 . . Jesus said unto them: The Son of man shall be betrayed
into the hands of men: and they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be
raised again.

Matt 20:18-19 . . Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall
be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall
condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to
scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.

Mark 9:31 . . He taught his disciples, and said unto them: The Son of man
is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he
is killed, he shall rise the third day.

Luke 9:22 . .The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by
the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and he must be killed and
on the third day be raised to life.

Luke 18:33 . . He will be handed over to the Gentiles. They will mock him,
insult him, spit on him, flog him and kill him. On the third day he will rise
again.

Luke 24:5-8 . . In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to
the ground, but the men said to them: Why do you look for the living among
the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he
was still with you in Galilee: "The Son of Man must be delivered into the
hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again."

Luke 24:21-23 . .We trusted that it had been he which should have
redeemed Israel: and beside all this, today is the third day since these
things were done.

Luke 24:46 . . He said unto them: Thus it is written, and thus it behooved
Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day

John 2:19 . . Jesus answered and said to them: Destroy this temple, and
in three days I will raise it up.

Acts 10:40 . . God raised him up the third day

1Cor 15:4 . . he rose again the third day

NOTE: There is some controversy regarding Matt 27:63 and Mark 8:31 due
to the word "after".

To begin with, those verses are outnumbered 11:2.

Plus; the Greek word translated "after" is somewhat ambiguous. It can
indicate moments following the conclusion of an event, but it can also indicate
moments within an event. I suggest letting the 11:2 majority decide how best
to interpret the intent of Matt 27:63 and Mark 8:31.

Let us concentrate on specifically what is said here.

You say "Doesn't that indicate Jesus should not have been seen alive until the fourth day?"

This, IMO, is accurate as it was not until early on the morning that actual people such as Mary came to take care of the body and it was gone.

That early morning , which we regard as a Sunday morning, If we were following the timing of things back then, would tell us that it was at 6AM or later... (If 6PM to 6AM were counted as a day... then the third day
ended at 6 AM .... Jesus was out of the tomb and not to be seen there... hence you are correct 4th day.

The following from your above verses that pertain to His being raised the third day...............

and the third day he shall be raised again.

and the third day he shall rise again.

he shall rise the third day.

on the third day be raised again."

and on the third day be raised to life.

the third day he will rise
again.

to rise from the dead the third day

raised him up the third day

he rose again the third day

......... Not one of these says anything about anyone seeing Him on the day he would arise.

There were 2 ways to count things back then.... The common Jewish way of the Sabbath starting at 6PM or sundown, and also references to ... for example .... the actual day of the week being a day.

Jesus said "For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Jesus died in the daytime. On that 3rd day he would be raised up.

I think a more interesting question is raised from where... The heart of the earth, or His retrieval of His bones from the tomb as He was coming from the heart of the earth.....?

The only absolute in this is that there is no way that he was crucified and died on a Friday.

But that is for another time.

The Hebrew "three days and three nights" does not mean 3 24-hour days. It was a figure of speech.
That above statement is a blatant falsehood.

It is nothing but a 'tradition' from men's doctrines, particularly from the Catholic tradition that began the false idea that Jesus was crucified on a Friday with failure to use the Hebrew calendar reckoning of Jesus' day, which was from sunset to sunset for a calendar day.

When Jesus said 3 days and 3 nights, He meant that literally, 3 each 12 hr. day periods, and 3 each 12 hr. night periods. Anything else is just a false tradition from men.

1st Night
= Jesus' body buried just prior to sunset Wednesday on the preparation day. Sunset Wednesday began Thursday. Thursday sunset to Thursday dawn was 1st night.

1st Day = Thursday dawn to Thursday sunset. Sunset Thursday began Friday night.

2nd Night = Friday night to Friday dawn.

2nd Day = Friday dawn to Friday sunset. Sunset Friday began Saturday.

3rd Night = Saturday night to Saturday dawn.

3rd Day = Saturday dawn to Saturday sunset. Sunset Saturday began Sunday night.

Sunday Night = sometime from Saturday sunset to Sunday morning, Jesus rose and was seen.
