27 Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’

The disciples will sin and fall. In particular, Peter will deny Jesus.

I believe 2 purposes were served here:
1) to protect the disciples from the Jews and
2) to prevent them from interfering in Christ's "trial" and crucifixion.

I would add . . . to fulfill prophecy. Perhaps also for the spiritual growth it would bring as they better understand their own weakness.

I understand this word to mean, to be entangled by something that offends you, causing you to trip and fall.
