Don't you have to pray in order to become a Christian?

No. The classic biblical model is found in Acts 8:12.

SHURF is an acronym from the parable of the sower (Matthew 13; Mark 4; Luke 8) -> See, Hear, Understand, Repent, and be Forgiven.

One still must pray to the Father in Jesus Name asking for their sins to be forgiven, see 1 John 1:9

Then one must confess to the Lord that they believe in their heart and accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior which is prayer to the Lord.

The point is they do not believe God exists, so they are "praying" to some other deity like some demon floating by

The survey is about people who believe God exists but have some doubt about it. They aren’t atheists. They aren’t agnostics. They have one foot in belief and the other in doubt / uncertainty. They lean toward belief. A hybrid.
