What evidence did Paul have to ask this question?

They weren't missing only one baptism.
They were missing two baptisms.
1) The baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus. (Father Son and Holy Spirit) ???
2) The Baptism with the Holy Spirit. ("When Paul placed his hands on them,
the Holy Spirit came on them,and they spoke in tongues[b] and prophesied.")

I'm concluding that these disciples that the Apostle Paul encountered in Ephesus were disciples of Apollos.

It seems that this group (twelve men in all) had become disciples before Priscilla and Aquila
"... explained to him the way of God more adequately." - Acts 18:26
Which included the baptism in Jesus' name. (Father, Son and Spirit) ???

Curious that the "Father, Son and Spirit" aspect of baptism is only in Matthew 28:19.
It does not reappear in the rest of the NT. (correct me if I am wrong)

If I could go back in time and have a little chat with the Apostle Paul I would let him know that there are going to be many who only know the Baptism of John. There will be little fruit of the Holy Spirit with many to come.

And that’s why you never see any Pentecostal churches named after St. Apollos.

For that matter, I don’t recall ever seeing a Catholic, Baptist, Lutheran, Greek Orthodox, or Methodist church named after St. Apollos either. A long-forgotten saint who was a leader in spreading the Gospel in the early church but is only known in posterity for his deficiency and conflicts with Paul and Prisca and Aquila.
