Mat 24:36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.
What is the word "knoweth?" What does "that day" refer to?
To understand this verse you need to start at the beginning of the chapter and “rightly divide.” Christ is teaching His disciples in this chapter and continues through Ch 25: 26.
Verses 1 – 3a sets the stage,
Mat 24:1 And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple.
Mat 24:2 And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
Mat 24:3a And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying,
In 24:3b, the disciples ask Christ three questions,
“Mat 24:3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us,
when shall these things be?
and what shall be the sign of thy coming (G3952 = parousia = a being near, that is, advent, presence ),
and of the end (G4930) of the world (G165)? (G4930 = sunteleia = entire completion) (G165 = aiōn = age = administration).
Compare Telos (G5056 = the actual end) from verse 6.
Christ answers these questions starting in verse 4 and continues to Chapter 25:26.
This is where a student of Scripture needs to “rightly divide.”
The answer to the first question, “when shall these things be?” is found from 24: 4 – 6.
The answer to the second question, “what shall be the sign of thy coming?” is from 24: 7—28.
The answer to the third question, “and of the end of the world?” is from 24: 29 – 25: 46.
Look first at the answer to the first question, ““when shall these things be?”
Mat 24:4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
Mat 24:5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
Mat 24:6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end (G5060) is not yet.
Verse 7 starts the answer to the second question, ““what shall be the sign of thy coming?” Again the word “coming” is “parousia” and it is a technical expression for the arrival of the King.
The second answer goes through verse 28.
The answer to the third question “and of the end of the world?” is from 24: 29 – 25: 46.
Matthew 24: 36, “But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only” is part of the answer to the third question which is, “(what shall be the sign) of the end (G4930) of the world (G165)?” 24:29 -- 25:46
What is “that day” referring to? “that” = ekeinos = that one, selfsame day and hour, it is the day and hour being spoken of in the answer to the third question.
The word in this verse that most people do not understand is the word “knoweth.” It is the verb οιδεν = to know (intuitively) without effort, to understand. it is subjective.
We can know if we study, ginosko = to know (by experience, or effort); to acquire knowledge, become acquainted with; hence, to come or get to know, learn, perceive.
So what is verse 36 telling us? It is saying that "No person knows intuitively the day or hour being spoken of ....” but if a person STUDIES they can know the day and hour being spoken of.
