Mat 24:36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.

What is the word "knoweth?" What does "that day" refer to?

To understand this verse you need to start at the beginning of the chapter and “rightly divide.” Christ is teaching His disciples in this chapter and continues through Ch 25: 26.

Verses 1 – 3a sets the stage,

Mat 24:1 And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple.
Mat 24:2 And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
Mat 24:3a And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying,

In 24:3b, the disciples ask Christ three questions,

“Mat 24:3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us,

when shall these things be?

and what shall be the sign of thy coming (G3952 = parousia = a being near, that is, advent, presence ),

and of the end (G4930) of the world (G165)? (G4930 = sunteleia = entire completion) (G165 = aiōn = age = administration).

Compare Telos (G5056 = the actual end) from verse 6.

Christ answers these questions starting in verse 4 and continues to Chapter 25:26.

This is where a student of Scripture needs to “rightly divide.”

The answer to the first question, “when shall these things be?” is found from 24: 4 – 6.
The answer to the second question, “what shall be the sign of thy coming?” is from 24: 7—28.
The answer to the third question, “and of the end of the world?” is from 24: 29 – 25: 46.

Look first at the answer to the first question, ““when shall these things be?”

Mat 24:4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
Mat 24:5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
Mat 24:6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end (G5060) is not yet.

Verse 7 starts the answer to the second question, ““what shall be the sign of thy coming?” Again the word “coming” is “parousia” and it is a technical expression for the arrival of the King.
The second answer goes through verse 28.

The answer to the third question “and of the end of the world?” is from 24: 29 – 25: 46.

Matthew 24: 36, “But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only” is part of the answer to the third question which is, “(what shall be the sign) of the end (G4930) of the world (G165)?” 24:29 -- 25:46
What is “that day” referring to? “that” = ekeinos = that one, selfsame day and hour, it is the day and hour being spoken of in the answer to the third question.
The word in this verse that most people do not understand is the word “knoweth.” It is the verb οιδεν = to know (intuitively) without effort, to understand. it is subjective.
We can know if we study, ginosko = to know (by experience, or effort); to acquire knowledge, become acquainted with; hence, to come or get to know, learn, perceive.

So what is verse 36 telling us? It is saying that "No person knows intuitively the day or hour being spoken of ....” but if a person STUDIES they can know the day and hour being spoken of.

Tell that to Harold Camping. I doubt that he's ever heard that before.

Well, Mr Camping thought he had studied but unfortunately he had only looked at a few proof texts and not at the whole of God’s Word. He made the same mistake so many others make, picking one or two verses here and another verse there and came up with a date. It just doesn’t work that way. At least he tried.

You need to be willing to study to find that out jig. I can show you how but I'm not going to do the work for you and if I just came out and told you, you wouldn't believe it anyway would you?

Well I must confess a couple of things, I really have little interest in you showing me anything Tom, and your right I probably wouldn't believe you especially on something concerning this topic.
Your better off keeping silent about this and that way you won't have to humble yourself later and apologize for getting the dates and times wrong.

That is exactly why I didn't answer your question, jig, I've read your studies.

The demons know the end of their time. " ... the end (G4930) of the world (G165)."

we should be very careful what translated words we choose to apply to scripture

Unfortunately there can be several words that can be used. 'the world' for instance sometimes refers to people, to the system or to the inhabited land. So we have to be absolutely sure of the context and that the word we choose is in harmony with other verses.

For example, you seem to be equating the end of the world with the end of the demons time. What connection is there with the spirits and the physical earth? I dont think they are connected...one is spiritual and one is pysical... so how could the end of their 'time' mean the end of our physical world?

I know that is why I use the Greek and Hebrew.

is that why you opt for the translation of 'end of the world' ?

I was quoting the last few words of Matthew 24:3, the text I had been talking about in the OP. Did you see the Strong's numbers I used, that is why I used them, I know the different words for "end" and "world" in Matthew 24.

If you're trying to say Matt.24:3 "world" is not about the end of this present world we are in now, simply because the word in the Greek is 'aion' which can mean 'age', then that's a weak interpretation, for other Scripture exists to confirm the context Jesus was speaking of indeed means the end of this present world.

2 Pet 3:10-12
10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
(KJV)
