Just read it as it is....

The verse says- "the kingdom of heaven" -is like a net..... It doesn't say "the gospel" is like a net.

The kingdom of heaven is not the gospel. The gospel (good news) is about the kingdom.

The Gospel is another way of saying 'Good News' and the Good News is that Jesus died for our sin and rose again from death to life. And all who put their trust in Jesus become spiritual children of Almighty God. Putting our trust in Jesus, accepting Him, is called being born again or saved.

I think the 'net' parable is saying that not everybody who believes in God is saved and so will not inherit his kingdom.

See here first what happened before Jesus died and resurrected:

Lu 5:5	And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.
Lu 5:6	And when they had this done, they enclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.

Then see here what happened after Jesus died and resurrected:

Joh 21:10	Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught.
Joh 21:11	Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken.

Now remember what Jesus had said to them here:

Mt 4:19

And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

The old man working as best he can with that old net that breaks catches effectively nothing for the Kingdom of God...They slip away back into the sea of unredeemed humanity.

But the new man with his new net catches a full batch of 153 fish and the net holds. Are they not caught for the Kingdom of God. Why 153?

So what is the net?

[48] when it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into vessels but threw away the bad.
[49] So it will be at the close of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous,
[50] and throw them into the furnace of fire; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.

I believe "net" refers to the fact that we cannot escape judgment.

I think the point of the story is that the Lord gives us a free will, and some will follow God, and others will not. Then, at the end, we will be judged according to the lives we've lived.

It's like a net..... so then, to understand-- you should ask yourself- "What is a net like?"

In this context given-- it's a device for catching fish. So what is the kingdom of heaven like? It's like a way of catching all kinds of fish, that are later sorted through-- keeping the nice, big (good) ones and getting rid of the undesirables.

Of course, this isn't the only explanation Jesus offers us of what the kingdom of heaven is like....

He also said, “This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.” Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.” With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand.

It's like a net..... so then, to understand-- you should ask yourself- "What is a net like?"
