Please go and read this passage and afterward please tell me what you think of the Salvation Army use of kettles.

Thanks.

Its something totally different. The Salvation army is soliciting for donations, that act is not one that can be done in secret. Those who are doing the giving by dropping money in the kettle, and may do so with anonymity.

I feel that the kettles cause people to believe, mistakenly, that they were good and therefore it will be looked upon with favor in The Kingdom, when they already have their reward, they appear pious before men.

This hinders the real way that alms are to be given as told to us by Our King.

I feel it would be better if people send the money via mail or slipped through a slot at the army building with no indication who it is from would be in keeping with Matthew 6.

I try and warn people do not place the money in those kettles before men.

I agree that there are much better ways to give. A smaller organization will probably be more efficient; 20% of your donation is likely to be overhead if it goes in the kettle.

They try to guilt people into giving: "look at me standing out here in the cold ringing this bell all day, if you walk by me your a horrible person"... "I mean happy holidays!"
They tap a resource to feed the poor, one that would go to waste.

The intent of Matthew 6:1-4 is not to hinder you from giving. It is a warning against giving with the intent of having people see you doing it. People do this to gain some social advantage. If your giving to a stranger that doesn't know exactly how much your giving there is no social benefit for you.

How would this situation be any different than putting money in a collection plate?

The collection plate at your church is not alms. That is tithing, a different act.

The King was adamant about not letting man see your alm giving. If you do it you will get nothing in The Kingdom.

So people mistakenly believe they earn favour if they put some coins in. When they have their reward in having men see them as pious.

Would it not be better to be like a reverse thief? You give away alms with no one knowing? I believe this is much better and a lot more fun.
