From a kiwi living in Australia, yes, that was fairly accurate, although it is difficult to encapsulate all the intricacies and nuances of a complicated birth. The brief reference to the Maori embracing Christianity was an understatement. The first missionary martyrs in New Zealand were two friends who wanted to share Christ with a traditional enemy tribe. That was 140 years ago of thereabouts.
100 years before any European arrived, a spiritual elder (tohunga) of the Ngati Porou tribe of the East Coast of the North Island had a vision of strange people coming with a book that would tell them of a Son who died for them. The Maori generally embraced Christianity although it didn't entirely stop them from making war on their neighbours. It's a long story. And complicated.
