Matthew 19:16-17 KJV
16) And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
17) And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

Is Jesus good?

Was Jesus asking this man for a denial that He Himself is good? Or an invitation to think it through?

Much love!

I think that was exceptionally well stated! I definitely think Jesus was saying that as being divine he was good, but that man, separated from God by sin, cannot do good without becoming reconnected with Deity. "Unless you abide in the vine, you can produce no fruit." John 15.5 (my paraphrase)

It almost seems that Jesus is telling this man that he doesn't believe that Jesus IS God. So if he doesn't believe that He is God in flesh, but just a teacher or Rabbi, and only God is always good in all His ways...since Jesus was good ALL the time, I think Jesus was giving an invitation to "think it through"...if any of that makes sense, lol.

I'll answer your first question. Jesus said only God is good - so Jesus isn't good. Jesus is just doing God's will.

Sorry to have to take it to a trinitarian reference, but this is an interesting debate about this verse in that 'If Jesus were saying that HE is not good, and that only the Father is good, that would imply that the other 2 members of the trinity are not at all good.'

Humorous to me.

Jesus was certainly not claiming that He was not good, nor that He was/is not God.

This is definitely one of those instances where something is lost in the translation.

Jesus makes it very clear that He is God in many other places, and as Pearl pointed out, He claims to be the Good Shepherd.

Yes, Jesus was, and is, most definitely good.

Jesus himself said:
John 10:11-18
“I am the good shepherd."

So Jesus is good. Because he is God.
On the one hand Jesus said, "Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God" (Matthew 19:17).

On the other hand he said, "I am the good shepherd." (John 10:11)

On the one hand, Jesus is setting an example for us. We aren't good - God is good - and God is showing us the way.

On the other hand, Jesus is God in flesh, I believe. That would make him good.

That's the best I can do off the top of my head.

Yes and no. I think he was God in flesh, but I think one of his purposes was to set an example for us.
Yea, I've heard it said both ways, that Jesus was telling us we aren't good, including him, without the Father and without the Spirit. We are reliant upon the Father utterly, as Jesus himself was.

On the other hand, it is said that even as a man Jesus is still divine, or "God." As such, he had to be doing both, pointing man towards necessity of reliance upon God and declaring his own Deity.

It did seem Jesus was testing the guy, to see if he saw God in him. Just my opinion. But I cannot refute Pearl's quote where Jesus said he was the *Good* Shepherd. In essence, he was indeed saying he was good.

Ezekiel 34:11-12

11For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, I Myself will search for My flock and seek them out. 12As a shepherd looks for his scattered sheep when he is among the flock, so I will look for My flock. I will rescue them from all the places to which they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness.
