The Pharisees motivation was by law and not love, which made them hypocrites. If you love someone you will not violate their laws or their principles. Instead, you will try to please them, because you love them. The Pharisees were proud because they thought that they were keeping the law. It was all about them. They could care less what God thought about them. If they cared about what God thought about them, they would have become Christians, because they would have discovered that they were sinners in need of mercy and grace.
A good son does not need laws or rules. A good son knows what is required of him and acts accordingly. A good son wants to please his father and does not do things that makes his father ashamed of him. Jesus said, "I always do those things that please him".
