Christ died for our sins, that's good but we go a little deeper when you look at being crucified with him. The cross was a place of horror, the unspeakable things Christ went through before and on the cross. When a believer comes to Christ they usually don't realize they were in him when he went to the cross. All in Adam crucified in Christ the scripture says,
14 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: - 2 Corinthians 5:14.
I use to look at a piece of jewelry, the cross, and think that is Jesus death on that cross. But now I'm reminded that it was you and I with him on that cross. The crucified life (as it was so affectionately referred to) will be your death in Christ on that dark day. In one place it is written,
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. - Hebrews 12:2-3.
The joy that was set before him he endured the cross. What was his joy that was set before him? Humanity would once and for all be free from Satanic rule over them. Jesus Christ the author and finisher of our faith went to the cross on his own free will and the will of the father to loose the bonds that held mankind captive. So it was not some form of addiction that held you it was the sin nature that held humanity hostage if you will. There was no freedom before the killing out of the sin nature, you could not keep enough laws to free you of the Satanic fallen death life sin spirit nature.
Held in a cold dry place by nature, humanity struggled to free itself. But to no avail, there was no getting free as long as sin had life. "Oh the blood of Jesus, oh the blood of Jesus, it washes white as snow." The blood that drained from the blessed body of Christ would wash the sinning nature out of humanity for eternity. Glory to God.
