The story of the road to Emmaus is found in Luke 24:13–35. It happens on the same day that Jesus rose from the dead. Two of His disciples were walking from Jerusalem to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles away. They were sad and confused because of everything that had happened — the arrest, crucifixion, and reports that the tomb was empty.

As they walked, Jesus Himself joined them, but their eyes were restrained, so they did not recognize Him (Luke 24:15–16). This detail shows that spiritual understanding is not just about seeing with the eyes but about the heart being opened by God.

Their lack of understanding

When Jesus asked what they were talking about, they told Him all that had happened concerning “Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people” (Luke 24:19). They said they had hoped He was the one to redeem Israel, but now they were unsure. They had even heard that some women saw angels who said He was alive (Luke 24:22–23).

This shows that they knew the events but did not understand their meaning. They had Scripture, but they did not yet grasp how the prophets spoke of the suffering and resurrection of the Messiah.

Jesus opens the Scriptures

Then Jesus said to them,
“O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?” (Luke 24:25–26)
Jesus explains that their lack of belief was due to not understanding Scripture. He then began to teach them,

“And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.” (Luke 24:27)
This is one of the most powerful moments in the Bible. Jesus Himself gives them a lesson showing that the entire Old Testament points to Him — from the Law of Moses, through the Prophets, to the Psalms. He showed that His suffering, death, and resurrection were all foretold.

Spiritual understanding is revealed by Jesus

When they arrived at Emmaus, they urged Him to stay with them. At supper, He took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them — then their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him (Luke 24:30–31).
Notice the words:
“Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.”
This was not just physical recognition; it was spiritual revelation. Their “eyes” were opened in the same sense that Adam and Eve’s were opened in Genesis — but this time, not to sin, but to truth and faith.

Their response confirms this understanding:
“Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:32)
Here, The word “opened” (Greek dianoigō) means to open fully, to give understanding or insight. So it was Jesus Himself who gave them the ability to understand the Scriptures.

Jesus later opens all the disciples’ understanding

Later, when He appeared to the eleven, the same event happened again:
“Then He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.” (Luke 24:45)
This verse confirms clearly that spiritual understanding of Scripture comes from Jesus. The disciples already knew the words, but they did not truly understand their meaning until He opened their minds.

This answers those who say the disciples did not yet have full understanding — they did not before this moment, but they received it directly from the risen Lord.

The fruit of understanding

After their eyes were opened, the two disciples immediately returned to Jerusalem to tell the others what had happened and how they recognized Jesus “in the breaking of bread” (Luke 24:35). They went from confusion to faith, from sorrow to joy.

This change shows what happens when Christ gives understanding — the heart is set on fire, and faith becomes alive. They no longer doubted the prophets or the resurrection; now they knew the truth because the Lord Himself revealed it.
