WASHINGTON — The House, citing the nation's religious origins, voted Wednesday to protect the Pledge of Allegiance from federal judges who might try to stop schoolchildren and others from reciting it because of the phrase "under God."
I guess I am happy this passed. It seems to me that we're in a sad state of society when it takes a law being passed to keep God in our pledge and keep it away from the courts. Some people may simply dismiss the issue as "oh it's just the pledge" but they don't understand that this is just one goal in the line of many. I saw it stated on a Canadian liberal website the other day (though these guys consider themselves moderates) that religion has no place in public life.

I would agree with you if the "under God" was part of the pledge from the begining. It was added later when we were in the midst of our Cold War against the USSR. So, it seems that we added it just to thumb our noses at another country. Shrug... not very altruistic in my view. :naughty:

Well true, but look at the situation of the Cold War. Communism thrives on a type of atheism in that national pride is the only religion. The addition of "under God" to the pledge was an attempt at unifying and rallying America under what it was built on. As I pointed out, this is a smaller goal in an overall larger goal to stamp out any mention of God anywhere. It's what really gets me because we have a rendering of muhammed engraved upon our Supreme Court yet there's no push to get that removed and, quite frankly, I can care less that it's up there.http://www.supremecourtus.gov/about/north&southwalls.pdf

We have gone farther from God. it was in the so called "Fabulous 50"s that this was added while we were begining to "Do it in the back seat"Thus sayeth the Lord "You worship me with your lips but your hearts are far from me."
