Beats me, it was information I found in the Thompson Chain Reference bible about the hebrews times, seasons and festivals? Do you know? Haha. I found it interesting when reading. Thinking about it we do not live in walled cities, or anything.
Lev 25.29 “‘Anyone who sells a house in a walled city retains the right of redemption a full year after its sale. During that time the seller may redeem it. 30 If it is not redeemed before a full year has passed, the house in the walled city shall belong permanently to the buyer and the buyer’s descendants. It is not to be returned in the Jubilee. 31 But houses in villages without walls around them are to be considered as belonging to the open country. They can be redeemed, and they are to be returned in the Jubilee."
Pat Robertson used to talk a lot on the 700 Club about the principle of releasing debt, when I used to watch that shows years ago. And I think it's very sound. God doesn't want to remove things from people forever. There is a natural right to things that God bestows on people, which they may lose for one reason or another, and later have restored to them.
In the US Constitution we read about "natural rights," and I think that's correct, if only given by Deists who had an incomplete view of what "Nature's God" was. So we should indeed talk about releasing the people from debts, and from the current attempt, by the govt. to enslave people by any means at their disposal.
The "walled city" is self-explained in the passage. God is concerned about acreage, and not some kind of community setup, in which multiple families are involved. When you buy a house in the city today, you buy into a sewer system, in which all are called upon to pay. But if someone claims he is still on a septic system in that city, he or she will be forced to buy into the city sewer, since it involves multiple citizens, and not just one family.
The walled city was like selling your condo. It isn't an individual inheritance, but rather, a community inheritance. You can permanently give up that community possession, and still have rights to land, a house, and your own privacy.
The idea is to get free of debt, and to secure a place to call your own. We can make mistakes, or suffer tragedy. But we have a God who sees our problem. And we should rest secure that He will restore things to those who live uprightly.
Today we have some of the problem solved through the use of money. We can live in a community setup like a condo, sell the thing if the community is disagreeable, and move out into the suburbs or into the country, to live our lives free of stress.
But the problem is, the govt. does manipulate the value of money. And it passes laws that follow us into the suburbs and into the country. We're stuck in this money system, and monetary policy is being controlled by the govt. We really need to be wise and pray about this, so that we can stay ahead of the system, and not let the system creep up on us!
