"Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye
have eternal life: and they are they
which testify of Me."
Ever read through Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy and thought, "Good gravy, will all these laws ever end?" Seemingly innumerable laws about oxen and crop rotation and clothing and even slave ownership...the list seems endless. And, we're supposed to believe "they are they which testify of Me"?have eternal life: and they are they
which testify of Me."
Exodus 21 KJV
[2] If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.
[3] If he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself: if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him.
[4] If his master have given him a wife, and she have born him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself.
Now, that's tough. If he was already married when he entered servitude, he'd take his wife with him when his six years were up. But, if he was a single man who married after the fact, in six years he could go, but his family had to remain behind.[3] If he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself: if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him.
[4] If his master have given him a wife, and she have born him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself.
[5] And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free:
[6] Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him for ever.
So, if the servant so loved his family that he couldn't bear to be apart from them, he would submit to remain his master's servant forever. Forever is a long time. What great love must he have for his family, amen?
OK, so how does any of this seemingly mundane
Old Testament law "testify of Me"???
Old Testament law "testify of Me"???
Psalm 40 KJV
[6] Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.
[7] Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me,
[8] I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.
The writer of Hebrews plainly points out that the subject of this OT prophecy is Jesus. Did you notice that His ears are "opened"? It's the Hebrew word "kārâ" and one of the translations for it is "pierced". Jesus' ears were "pierced".
HIS EARS WERE PIERCED...WITH AN AWL.
Before the foundation of the world, Jesus agreed that - should man sin - He would leave His lofty throne and come to this Earth as a lowly Servant to minister to His human family and die the death we deserve, and thus fulfill the will of His Father. It was here He became betrothed to His bride, the church. Having fulfilled every bit of His Servant obligations on Earth, He left to continue His work as our High Priest, but His great love for us would not allow Him to go out free and alone. Instead, He chose to have His "ear pierced" and forever be bound in the tenement of the flesh, forever bear the marks of His Servant duties in His hands and feet and sides, forever appear as He did during His time as a Servant - and with undying love, forever be a Husband to His beloved bride, the church. Thank you, Jesus!
"Behold, the bridegroom cometh!"
