i am guilty. I am a people pleaser. This is especially evident on the job. I will work hours after quitting time - weekends - whatever is necessary. My goal? Avoiding criticism from the boss. No matter that this is fruitless - bosses are put in place to improve performance. I happen to have a good boss, but higher up the chain.........not so much. My job depends on pleasing clients enough so they will not complain to the higher up admin. Also, I have been sick for weeks....I call it a job hazard - I work with low income folks and the homeless. I carry a 75 person caseload - and all the criminally insane in the system. I am good at my job, but I cannot please everyone. I was just written up because I failed to see a client due to a crisis. I made a clinical decision, but it caught up with me and now after a week of deathly pneumonia, I am facing more of a no win situation than ever. The problem is, I love my job and I am great with my clients. Not sure how to balance the crazy. Advice? I was at work from 7 until 8 PM tonight.

Right now, I am as good as my last kick.........

Try not to worry about it, there is nothing more you can do to influence your bosses decision. Just try to continue to meet or exceed their current expectations for you and see if this blows over. Your direct supervisor hasn't fired you yet, so your probably in the clear with him or her for now. If the admin steps in and insists you be fired there is nothing your direct supervisor can do about it.

Ecclesiastes 10:4 "If a ruler's anger rises against you, do not leave your post; calmness can lay great offenses to rest."

You need to learn when to leave your job at work. I know it can difficult at times but your well-being depends on it. It is also crucial to be able to get your boss on-board regarding any personal crisis' as early as possible. Perhaps he could pass some clients onto other colleagues during those times. You do not need to prove to yourself or to others how indispensable you are because in the eyes of your bosses, this is not always how they measure things. However, as a believer in Jesus, you are exactly where you need to be and unbeknownly blessing those whom you serve.

I'm really sorry that you had been pulled up for not meeting expectations but when you deal in this arena, it happens. Try not to let it get you down brother. Just dust off and move forward. I worked in a similar employment situation in the past where I was directly responsible for 300 clients who were low-income and some coming out of the Justice system needing assistance to integrate back into society. Communicating with your team is the key ~ ;)

Bless ya!

Work the extra hours if your boss needs you to. We are mostly naïve of the thoughts of bosses and co-workers (or maybe just me).

Helping others with their work and long hours to impress seems like something that will get co-workers and bosses to conspire and remove you for feeling threatened.

Maybe you failed to see the client because you were tired from late hours?

Yes, when I knew things were going down hill with my home life, I went to my boss and told her what was going on (not too many details though) and asked her to please let me know if it was starting to affect my work. She understood and thanked my for letting her know ahead of time. She told me she was glad because she didn't want to have to ask me later or see me get in trouble.

Aspen, Brother. I am the same way as far as I am all about work (getting better at being all about my kids and a little less about work) but I too had to find the balance between home and work. Your health is important, if you are not in good health, then, obviously, as you are aware, you aren't any good to your clients. You know what you need to do, Aspen.

As I always have, I pray for you dear brother. May the Lord bless you and keep you! :)

For me, it is so difficult because I have to accept the fact that in order to serve the many, I have to short change everyone.

Is it possible for you to find a job with similar duties but better working conditions? Maybe just keep your eyes open while you get through your current job?

River, the short answer is yes. However, it would probably require a relocation and I am not in a position to do so. The problem with my city is that it has 6 universities and relatively cheap housing. Besides, I love working with my clients......I am invested in walking with them and celebrating their successes. They are brave and tenacious. I never cease to be encouraged and impressed by them. It is just my love/hate relationship with the state that bothers me. We have this guy at work who lives his life like an emotional zombie. No way in hell can anyone read him, yet somehow he reached a point of leadership - that is the state for you - promote the zombie, shed the rest. All the guy does is generate paperwork. We are required to respond to his email as if our client's were suicidal.

I admit it; I have declared war on the admin. I show up at 6:00 am and leave at 6:00 pm. After working through lunch. I email admin a minute by minute activity log everyday. I will do so until I decide not to. They will not make a republican out of me no matter how hard they try to sugar coat their greed.
