Why is it called New Zealand?

Is there an old Zealand somewhere?

The first to discover this country, around 1300 (Indigenous-Maori) called it Aotearoa, or "the Land of the Long White Cloud."
Then came the Dutch explorer in 1642, Abel Tasman, who never stepped foot on the land, called it Staten Landt because he thought it was a piece of South America. Mapmakers realized that it wasn't, so they changed it to Nova Zeelandia (Latin).

In 1767 James Cook, a British explorer, anglicized it and named it New Zealand. It is still known in our country as Aotearoa or New Zealand.
