I will show how the preparation in John 9:31 was for the Passover sabbath day, not the weekly Saturday sabbath.
I will break this into sections and combine verses from all four gospel accounts.
JESUS BEFORE PILATE
[John 19:4 KJV] "Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him."
[John 19:14 KJV] "And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!" ************ Preparation was a day before a sabbath, It entailed getting ready for the sabbath and doing all necessary work. The preparation of the Passover here is for Nissan the 15th, the feast of unleavened bread. The feast of unleavened bread was from Nissan the 14th until the 21st. The 14th was when they sacrificed their lamb. This was the first day of the feast. The 15th was the start of seven days of eating unleavened bread. It is important to know that the entire feast of unleavened bread, from the 14th thru the 21st, was called Passover ******* [Luke 22:1 KJV] "Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover." ********* The preparation before the weekly sabbath was a Friday. It is said that the preparation here in John 19:14 is Friday's weekly preparation for the next day's sabbath.
THE CRUCIFIXION
[John 19:17 KJV] "And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called [the place] of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:"
[John 19:18 KJV] "Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst."
[John 19:31 KJV] "The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and [that] they might be taken away." ************** John removes any ambiguity of this preparation being the Passover and not the weekly sabbath. Jesus was on the cross, his body died at 3PM, before sunset. A Jewish day is from sunset to sunset (Leviticus 23:32), so what day is this? With a Friday preparation and crucifixion we would have this timeline:
Thursday sunset until the next sunset is Friday. Christ is said to crucified on Friday. Christ's body dies at 3PM before sunset, so it's still Friday.
THIS DAY WASN'T A SATURDAY SABBATH
[Matthew 27:57 KJV] "When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:"
[Matthew 27:58 KJV] "He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered."
[John 19:40 KJV] "Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury."
[Luke 23:54 KJV] "And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on." ********* Joseph claims the body in the evening after sunset. This is Friday's sunset, so it is NOW SATURDAY. If this is a Saturday, then it's the sabbath, so how could it be said that the sabbath "DREW ON" if it was the sabbath already? This day couldn't be a Saturday sabbath. The preparation of John 19:14,31 was for the Passover, not the Saturday sabbath.
Here is a summary
[John 19:14 KJV] "And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!" ******** This was when Christ was before Pilate, which I believe was a Thursday. It says plainly it was the preparation for the passover, not the weekly sabbath.
[John 19:31 KJV] "The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and [that] they might be taken away." ************ This is the day Christ was crucified, which I think was a Thursday. John says it was a high day sabbath.
A sabbath was a holy convocation, in which, no work was to be done.
Saturday sabbath was a holy convocation ************* [Leviticus 23:3 KJV] "Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day [is] the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work [therein]: it [is] the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings."
The first day of the feast of tabernacles was a holy convocation ************** [Leviticus 23:6 KJV] "And on the fifteenth day of the same month [is] the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread."
[Leviticus 23:7 KJV] "In the first day ye shall have an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein." ********** the first day of the feast was a holy convocation sabbath.
John says it was the preparation. A preparation was the day before a sabbath, in which, all work was to be completed, It occurs typically before the weekly Saturday sabbath. The day Christ was crucified was Nissan the 15th, the first day of the feast of unleavened bread and therefore a sabbath, a holy convocation. This day was said by John to be preparation.
There was another preparation day.
[Matthew 27:57 KJV] "When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:"
[Matthew 27:58 KJV] "He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered." *********** A Jewish day runs from sunset to sunset. Jesus was crucified Thursday and Jospeh begged Jesus's body at even. Thursday was over and it's now Friday. It is now preparation day for the Saturday sabbath. This is confirmed by this verse *********** [Matthew 27:62 KJV] "Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate," ********** the next day, Saturday, that followed the day of preparation, Friday, the chief priests and Pharisees came unto Pilate.
Thursday, the day of the crucifixion, was preparation for the first day of the feast of unleavened bread.
Friday was preparation for the Saturday sabbath.
In conclusion, John 19:14 says it was preparation for the Passover, not the weekly sabbath.
Jesus was crucified on Thursday and his body died at 3PM. Jesus died before sunset.
Joseph took his body and laid it in the tomb after sunset. After sunset makes it a Friday.
This Friday was the preparation for the next day's weekly Saturday sabbath.
Thursday was the preparation for the same day first day sabbath of the feast of the unleavened bread.
Words have significance in scripture, and are given by a God of detail and wisdom, using every jot and title to his glory. Two little words, "drew on", enables us to refute the teaching that the preparation in John 19:14,31 was for a Saturday sabbath.
