i wonder how to think as a psychitraic doctor
Are you asking about how would one as a psychiatrist look at the issues of Christians struggling with faith and mental health? Such as using the DSM to describe a mental illness versus potential spiritual attacks or something? Since a lot of psychology and mental health is driven forward by atheists they don’t see the supernatural in things. Trying to balance it out? Legally they have to follow the DSM. I’m not an expert in this at all but have some friends who are. This is the general mindset I hear.
1. Because of modern scientific and social advancements the first thing to do is to be aware that older DSMs have very different language and concepts than newer ones and that science tends to be ahead of the DSM. Such as older ones called homosexuality a disorder and newer ones realize it’s not. It’s normally updated to cover all things and they are reworking stuff about transgenderism now since we have more scientific data for it. So just because the DSM of today mentions something does not mean as more information comes in it will remain the same.
2. Many are not aware but that psychiatry is not just about mental health by helping to overcome faulty cognitive processes or delusions. It’s also growing to involve better brain anatomy and how synaptic neurons work. Sometimes a person is not severely depressed because of how they think themselves but because of a chemical or hormonal imbalance caused by either brain trauma which can involve thinking techniques to rewire the brain or it can even be because of dietary issues. What we eat is used to build our bodies. A Whole Foods plant and mushroom based diet has been shown to help rebalance the chemicals in the brain and can make someone feel much happier. So staying on top of both reductionist and holistic nutrition can help improve your ability to treat patients.
3. In general, the DSM demands that they use science over faith. Such as you can’t exclude medication for depression because you think it’s a demonic oppression. You have to work within the available tools supported by the scientific process and the counseling aspect can come from many different cultural backgrounds and perspectives including Christianity if you and the patient shares that view.
